Hereโ€™s Pattern 1 of the A natural minor scale ๐ŸŽธ

The natural minor scale has 7 notes instead of 5.

A simple way to think about it: the minor pentatonic scale leaves out two notes, while the natural minor scale puts those notes back in.

For now, focus on learning the notes and getting comfortable playing the full scale pattern.

๐ŸŽธ Here are all of the B minor triad shapes together.
This is a great comparison because you can see the same 3 notes:

B - D - F #

showing up all over the neck on different string sets.
Thatโ€™s the point of learning triads.
Youโ€™re not just memorizing random little chord shapes โ€” youโ€™re learning how one chord can be played in multiple places.

Want a killer way to actually practice these?

Use the Chord Trainer to generate chord progressions, choose the key and tempo, and play along using your A major triads! ๐Ÿ‘‡

This guitar chord progression uses a few 7th chords to give a common major progression a different sound.

That M7 gives the I chord a smoother sound, and the 7 adds more pull into the next chord.
Same progression idea, but with a little more color.

Not sure how to play major 7 or dominant 7 chords yet?

Here are the B minor triad shapes on strings 4โ€“6.
This string set gives you a lower, thicker version of the chord, which can work really well for riffs, rhythm parts, or adding movement without playing a full barre chord.

B minor is still just:
B - D - F #
Same 3 notes, different locations.

Thatโ€™s the real benefit of learning triads โ€” you start seeing the chord across the neck instead of being stuck with one shape.
Try playing one of these shapes, then move it into a simple chord progression and see how it sounds.

Hereโ€™s Pattern 5 of the F # minor pentatonic scale ๐ŸŽธ
This shape sits in a great spot on the neck and gives you a different way to see the same five notes.
Instead of just memorizing the pattern, work on making it feel comfortable. Try double picking each note, hammering on the notes, play it as fast as you can, etc.
The better you know each pattern, the easier it gets to move around the neck without feeling lost.

Here are the B minor triad shapes on strings 3โ€“5.

B minor is built from:
B - D - F #

If you already know the A minor triads, this is a great next step because the shapes are the same โ€” theyโ€™re just moved to a different spot on the neck.
Thatโ€™s one of the best parts about triads.

Once you understand the shape, you can start moving it around instead of relearning everything from scratch.
Try each shape slowly, then use one of them inside a chord progression or riff idea.
