Before he passed, I considered Wendell Berry to be the finest living author in America.
I had the great privilege of knowing Wendell and his wife Tanya for more than forty years.
Among the red rock north of Arches National Park, along with Barry Lopez, Ann Zwinger, Dave Foreman, Doug Peacock, Ken Sleight, Terry Tempest Williams, and a thousand others, we celebrated Edward Abbey's life and passing back in 1989.
Wendell began his speech with, "Imagine, if you will, the rolling green hills of Kentucky..."
He paused and then continued...
"Even I'm having a hard time imagining that right now!"
Let me now echo his words.
I'm having a hard time imagining Wendell Berry is gone, right now.
I first visited Lanes Landing Farm not long after that occasion. Wendell invited me out to see his farmland, or as he put it....
"I'm growing me a wilderness."
I farmed to***co, I ate Tanya's homemade lunches out in the to***co fields on the banks of the Kentucky River, and Wendell took me for one of his walks in his wilderness.
What an extraordinary man and writer!
"The Unsettling of America," "The Mad Farmer Poems," his novels, essays and poetry will live on forever and in my head until I too am gone.
What a privilege to have known him.
