Here's the thing nobody tells you about bezel setting. The bezel is only as good as the stone going into it.

A cabochon needs a flat back and a clean, even edge. If it doesn't have those, the metal will never sit right no matter how carefully you burnish. That's why cutting your own stones changes your metalwork. You stop seeing the stone and the setting as two separate things.

Two ways to try it. Intro to Lapidary is Monday the 17th, 6-8pm. It caps at three people, so it's a good one to bring a friend to. Or do the whole arc in one sitting in our Combo Class on Thursday the 20th, 3-7pm, where you cut a cabochon and then build the sterling silver bezel that holds it.

Comment LAPIDARY for Monday's class, or COMBO for Thursday's, and we'll send you the link.

The colors aren't decoration. They're grit.

Sunburst radial bristle discs come in a progression, and each color is a different abrasive. Start coarse to knock down your file marks, then step through finer and finer until the surface goes from scratched, to soft, to bright. Skip a step and you will see it in the final polish.

The reason we teach with these instead of a hard wheel is that they flex. They wrap around a curve and reach inside pierced work where nothing rigid can go. And they last, because the abrasive runs all the way through the bristle instead of sitting on the surface.

Most people buy one color, use it once, and come back for the rest of the progression.

A basket head is one of those settings people assume came from a factory.

You'll build one from wire. Measure, form the prongs, solder the cross members, then fabricate a bail to match. Five hours, one finished pendant sized for an 8mm stone.

Wednesday Aug 19, 4-9pm with Avery. Spots still open.

"Jewelry is what happens when patience meets metal."

Every maker starts as a beginner with shaky hands and a big idea. The bench doesn't ask you to be perfect. It just asks you to show up and keep going.

Happy Friday from all of us at the studio.

A little Friday reminder for the bench.

"You don't have to be perfect to make something beautiful. You just have to start." - B Golden Jewelry School

Every maker you admire started with a wobbly first cut and a solder joint that did not quite take. The skill comes from showing up and trying again. So this weekend, pick up the metal and make the thing. We are cheering you on.

"You don't find time to create. You make the time, and then you make."

Every finished piece started with someone protecting one hour at the bench. This weekend, protect yours.

Happy Friday, makers. Go make something you're proud of. New classes are always on the calendar at bgoldenjewelryschool.com.

A faceted stone, held tight in tiny metal prongs.

Prong setting is one of those skills that feels like magic the first time your stone locks in. Our students are cutting seats, bending prongs, and setting stones by hand. That first secure stone never gets old.
