It is with great sadness that I share our sweet, talented, clever, funny as hell, loving, loyal, kind, one liner queen & the true heart & soul of River Dog Run, Mary Ann Hestor, passed away. I will be forever grateful she made RDR what she called “her happy place” for many years & therefore made it so for all who came in the door, whom she loved & said the more the merrier!
To say she will be missed doesn’t begin to say how it feels to lose this wise, dear friend who became like part of the family!

Rest well you amazing MA! 💝 You have impacted many lives, made our days better & I hope you know now in your beautiful soul’s resting place how much you meant to so many of us just by being the uniquely special & loving MA you are! What a gift you have been!! You will always be forever deep in our hearts!

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Mary Ann Hester.

A Message from Our President:

Yesterday, I learned of the passing of Mary Ann Hester. Mary Ann served as a member of the Historic Saluda Committee for several years and assisted with many of our projects—most notably helping to co-author our book, "Images of America: Saluda." The picture I posted is from the promotional material related to the book.

She and I became friends during the sometimes challenging process of putting this book together. Her humor never wavered, and she quickly became “that person” who could track down a picture we needed from anywhere. No fear—just point her in the right direction, and off she would go.

If you knew Mary Ann, you likely enjoyed wine and cheese on her porch at least once—if not many times. She made the best pimento cheese. She truly lived up to the reputation that porch-sitting is a Saluda pastime. She loved to end her emails with “Cheers,” and there was always a wine joke woven into conversation. Whenever I spoke with her, she was either planning a dinner party or heading to one.

Mary Ann spent several years working at River Dog Run and that is where I most often caught up with her in recent years. She always greeted me with a joke, a little snark and that porch-sitting sense of humor was ever-present. I wouldn’t be surprised if she even created some of the quirky sayings found on pillows and merchandise in the store.

I will miss seeing Mary Ann around, as I’m sure many others will, too. So in the meantime—CHEERS, Mary Ann!

Saluda in January is a whole vibe. You can slip into a booth at for a morning biscuit without a wait and chat with the locals. You can grab a coffee sans the line. You can stroll our delightful shops unbothered by crowds or schedules. You can plop down on the porch at and soak in the quiet of the bare winter views. You can see the bones of our town without all the busy season buzz; really settle into the comfort of what makes Saluda so peaceful.
Come enjoy a mid-winter escape- we can’t wait to welcome you.
