What a day! After three years doing Virtual Festivals, today we returned to In Person at the McAllister Fine Arts Center at San Antonio College, and it was wonderful to be face-to-face again. A total of 29 of my students participated in the Festival, in 83 different events (Piano Solo, American Patriotic & Folk Song, Hymn Event, Duet and Theory). Some still needed to do a Virtual Festival, so we don't have all the results yet, but so far all were given Superior or Excellent ratings. More importantly, they have shared their music, worked so hard, and grown as musicians. Huge shout out to the students and their wonderful parents, as well as my colleagues who gave it their all to make this Festival happen. I have the best job.

Schubert was known for his gorgeous melodies. Earned reputation.

I recently learned this on a PBS Schubert documentary. Schubert had such enormous awe for Beethoven that when they passed each other on the street Schubert couldn't even look at him. There is so much in this story that sounds apocryphal, but it may very well be true.

HB 434 was introduced in the Texas legislature last November and the first draft removes fine arts credits as required for high school graduation. The Texas Cultural Trust is reaching out to Fine Arts education supporters and is working with the bill's author, Representative Keith Bell, to craft changes to the proposed legislation to retain the fine arts credit requirements in Texas high schools.

I personally know so many whose mental, emotional and social health, as well as academic success in high school was enhanced because of the arts. It helps some stay in school during a crucial period of their lives. Even if legislators are well-meaning (save money?), they simply don't understand the terrible negative consequences of such legislation.
