This Week in Aviation History

From record-breaking firsts to hard-learned lessons, this week shaped the skies we fly today.

October 5, 1905: Wilbur Wright pilots the Wright Flyer III for about 39 minutes, covering roughly 24 miles over Huffman Prairie, Ohio. It was the longest flight of its day and proof that powered flight could be practical, not just a brief hop.
October 11, 1910: Theodore Roosevelt becomes the first U.S. president to fly, taking a short ride in a Wright biplane at Kinloch Field near St. Louis. (He was out of office at the time, but still made history!)
October 7, 1919: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is founded in the Netherlands. More than a century later, it remains the oldest airline still operating under its original name.
October 5, 1930: The British airship R101 crashes in France on its maiden overseas voyage, killing 48 people. The tragedy effectively ended Britain's airship program.
October 5, 1931: Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon land in Wenatchee, Washington, completing the first nonstop flight across the Pacific Ocean, a 41-hour journey from Japan.
