Recently I began collecting artwork to display in my home. It is difficult to know what to purchase, especially if your purchase is viewed as an investment. The value of artwork can change, not only increase but decrease over time based on the public following the artist's work. Sometimes it can rely on the media coverage and marketing that raises the value. I have seen artwork that sells for $10,000 while an artist is alive and devalues after the death of the artist. Confusing...shouldn't it go up in value? In this situation, the artist was very active in the community and marketing his work. Once he passed away, much of his work past with him. Sad but true. So how do we know what to collect as an investment...simply buy what moves you. Buy something that truly captivates you. A piece that has you thinking all the time. Out of all the artwork I have purchased over the years, there are only two to three pieces that do this for me. That is what collecting art is about...connecting with the piece because it has connected with you.

From what pieces to buy, to how to do it on a budget, here's a beginners guide to why and how you should start an art collection. Peep inside for details.
