The June 2023 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,110,696 is a decrease of 19.6 percent compared to the June 2022 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,382,287. For comparison, the unadjusted June 2023 FBI NICS figure 2,152,187 reflects a 14.8 percent decrease from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 2,527,308 in June 2022. June marks the 47th month in a row that has exceeded 1 million adjusted background checks in a single month. “Americans have another million reasons to celebrate this Independence Day,” explained NSSF’s Mark Oliva to media. “This is notable because these figures buck the demands by gun control politicians to surrender rights. They are keeping alive the vision of our Founding Fathers that this would be a nation that celebrates the ethos of a responsibly armed citizenry.”

The April 2023 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,369,296 is an increase of 0.7 percent compared to the April 2022 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,359,908. For comparison, the unadjusted April 2023 FBI NICS figure 2,616,729 reflects a 3.3 percent increase from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 2,534,057 in April 2022. April 2023 marks the 45th month in a row that has exceeded 1 million adjusted background checks in a single month as well as the 3rd highest reported figure for April. “These figures show that when Americans are concerned that government authorities will deny them the full spectrum of their Second Amendment rights, they will respond by exercising those rights. It also shows that when barriers to lawful firearm ownership are torn down, law-abiding citizens will exercise their right to lawfully purchase fi****ms,” NSSF’s Mark Oliva told media.

For comparison, the unadjusted March 2023 FBI NICS figure of 2,954,230 reflects a 2.0 percent decrease from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 3,014,465 in March 2022. March 2023 marks the 44th month in a row that has exceeded 1 million adjusted background checks in a single month. “That sustained figure is clearly demonstrative of America’s continued desire to exercise their Second Amendment rights to lawfully purchase and own a firearm,” said NSSF’s Mark Oliva to media. “This trend continues even as President Joe Biden demands stricter gun control measures that only place barriers in the way of law-abiding citizens yet does nothing to address the ongoing issues of crime and access to mental health.”

NSSF’s Adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure for 2022 topped 16.4 million, making 2022 the third strongest year on record, behind only 2020 and 2021’s record setting years. The December 2022 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,747,506 is a decrease of 2.5 percent compared to the December 2021 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,792,797. “This trend is similar to that of what NSSF has witnessed in the past,” said NSSF’s Mark Oliva to media. “When a new ceiling is reached on background checks for retail gun sales, the market settles to a ‘new normal.’”

The September 2022 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,243,687 is a decrease of 7.9 percent compared to the September 2021 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,350,754. For comparison, the unadjusted September 2022 FBI NICS figure of 2,437,563 reflects a 6.3 percent decrease from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 2,602,293 in September 2021. September marked the 38th consecutive month of more than 1 million NICS verifications. NSSF’s Mark Oliva told media, “This demonstrates that law-abiding Americans continue to purchase fi****ms for self-defense, hunting, and recreational shooting at levels that were unseen just three years ago and that the firearm industry continues to meet that demand for lawful firearm ownership.”

Late last night, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee advanced flawed legislation that would ban the sale of commonly-owned rifles, shotguns, handguns and standard capacity magazines. In addition, the committee also approved legislation to repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) and to put law enforcement in danger by allowing the public release of sensitive law enforcement data on crime fi****ms.

Both bills could be voted on by the full House of Representatives as early as next week.
