More than just a nursery, City Farmers is a wonderful day-trip location with its fun, child-friendly farm animal menagerie--a miniature donkeys, Dexter cow, goats, turkeys, chickens, ducks, turtles, fish, cat, and a parrot--play area, rose area and bonsai and bamboo sitting area. The old farmer still answers the phone personally.

Have you ever cruised down Fairmont Avenue and spotted that mural? That is the Foodshed Small Farm Distro & Resource Hub, and the story behind it is worth knowing. 🌱

Foodshed is a farmer and worker-owned cooperative based right here in City Heights, San Diego. It started in 2020 when local food and the people growing it suddenly were thrust into the spotlight, revealing just how essential local food is!

Today, you can shop Saturdays and Tuesdays at their market and get to know your local farmer.

Ricardo, one of the founding members, puts it perfectly. All of a sudden farmers became essential. And what started as a group of neighbors who all lived in the same community became something much bigger, a cooperative that now supports farmers from all across San Diego. 🤎

They stayed rooted in City Heights on purpose. That is the kind of organization we love to talk about.

This is just the beginning of our visit. Stay tuned for more from the Foodshed. 🌿

Let's talk about container gardening! Watered yesterday but soil's dry again today? Don't worry, it's not you... it's your soil! 💦

Warmer days means thirsty plants, but container gardening has its own challenges. Sandy or older soil struggles to retain moisture, while your pot type makes a huge difference too!

Unglazed clay pots breathe well (but dry quickly), while glazed containers lock in moisture. Watching how water drains can tell you a lot about what's happening below the surface.

Quick fixes? Water more frequently in smaller amounts, or it might be time for a pot upgrade! Repotting with fresh soil creates more water-holding capacity for those thirsty roots. 🌱

These natural predators hunt grubs, fungus gnats, weevils, and cutworms in the soil, without killing off beneficial bugs.

🦠 This video is a little walk through on what they are, how they work, and how to apply.

🧽 They arrive alive on a sponge, you break it up, mix with water, and pour via a watering can.

Pests die in days, and lifecycles can be interrupted over a one or two month process. The best part is each sponge can cover massive areas, and can be kept (sealed) in your fridge for up to a month.

We recommend discussing in store when is a good time to apply. (Note: if you just see a few grubs, don't worry! grubs can be beneficial. this video was made for a customer who was massively struggling with root damage from nematodes.)

🐞 Organic pest control that doesn't harm the good pests, and smart, thoughtful application to stay ahead of cycles of pests.

What if the herbs you plant this week could still be flavoring your meals in December? 🌿

Basil, parsley, dill, and rue are some of the fastest growing plants you can put in the ground right now. The harvests get so good this time of year that the real question becomes what to do with all of it.

The answer is simpler than you think:

Cut big before the season turns. Once herbs like these flower and go to seed they start getting bitter. Harvest before that happens.

Lay them on white paper in the sun. Three days is all it takes to dry them completely (you can use a wire collander to cover / keep from pets) ☀️

Store in a sealed jar. They will last months on your shelf and even longer if kept airtight

Four days ago Sam trimmed some tops and set them out to dry. They are already done and ready to store.

That is how easy this is. ♻️ And guess what! No plastic waste because you can return your black plastic pots to us!

Enjoy your herbs now and put some away for later. Stop by the nursery and we will point you toward the best ones to start with!

Apply the compost to your beds this month for improved water retention during summer heat.

Plant your plum in September when soil temperatures drop and the tree can focus on root establishment rather than managing heat stress.

- Santa Rosa Plum (self-fertile, 3-5 years to maturity, low chill)

🍂 Every fall, dozens of local artists turn our nursery into a one-day marketplace of handmade goods.. This year our 2026 Fall Harvest Festival is on October 10th, 9a-4p.

The way it works: registration happens in person on sign-up day, and to find out when that is, as well as learn more, are the folks on our vendor email list. That email is landing in inboxes tomorrow, so now is the moment to get on it. (See link, below in comments.)

Spots are assigned on sign-up date first come, first served and they disappear quick, so being on the list can be useful ✅
