Quick cell phone video of prototype I have been building for my friend Sam at Sam Evans The prototype has a lot of extra controls for Sam to fine tune the circuit to his likes. Cell phone isn’t really showing how good it sounds.

I designed this amp for StewMac back in 2020 and by the time it actually came out, there were a few modifications to the original design. I have been modifying the final product (which is a great amp as it stands). I swapped the volume and tone k***s for push/pull pots. Now the Tone k**b can be pulled and activate a negative feedback loop to add clarity and note definition (and lowers gain a bit). The Volume k**b can be pulled and it activates a high gain boost (a Jose mod, so to speak). It is just adding two cathode bypass capacitors. I will draw up a DIY schematic for anyone who is interested. I will also include the battery option modification.

Here is the first quick modification reel on the StewMac VF-1 amplifier. I remove internal rectifier, freeing up some extra voltage. The original kit comes with an AC wall wart, and then gets rectified as the AC goes into the chassis, turning it into a DC supply. This allows a battery pack to be used for longer periods of time. Technically, a DC wall wart could already be used (or a battery pack), but that rectifier eats up about a volt, doing nothing. More to come

The StewMac VF-1 battery mod is up and running. Long story as short as possible. When I originally designed this amp, it was always intended to run off a battery or a wall warr. Hence the original name, the Port-A-Watty. When the amp came out as the VF-1, some modifications had been made to the original design. One was running off an AC wall wart, instead of a DC supply. There is still tweaks to be done. Will keep people uodated. Film by Lulu Grimm

Fender made White Amplifier underneath Satellite CC45 amplifier head. The CC stood for Charlie Christian, as the amp was heavily inspired by the amps Charlie used to use. The other early amp names were Fat Man and Little Boy, which ended up being the Atom and Neutron.

My buddy Ben Moore got me this all encompasing book about Electro-Harmonix written by Josh Scott (of JHS Pedals ) and Danial Danger (with Dan Epstein). Had to take a picture with some of my favorite Big Muffs. I have more EHX pedals I should have put in there, but this is a pretty good set. Tall Font and Civil War tied for favorites. Extremely great read with some much info I never knew. Highly recommended

I went ahead and got myself one of the StewMac VF-1 amplifier kits that I had a hand in designing. Fun build. Took me just over two hours. A number of differences from my original design, but keeps the heart of the original. I see a few good places for some mods. Very proud to have had a hand in this.

Got to give a checkup to this amp today. This was originally built for Joe Perry of Aerosmith fame, but quickly found its way via Robert Czaykowski to the utterly delightful Walter Becker from Steely Dan. Its a Satellite Atom 2x10 combo. I think it may be the only Atom 2x10 combo. Its a bit of a convoluted story you can ask me about in person. If you do not know who NiteBob is, you need to become acquainted with him and his history. He is one of the all time great human beings on this planet.
