🌉 SAN FRANCISCO 🌉

Bobby Hutcherson feat. Harold Land

Our friend Leonard turned me on to this record about two years ago, and I’d been searching for an affordable vinyl copy ever since. I personally find this one to be a masterpiece. The dynamic between Hutcherson on vibes, percussion, and marimba, and the incredible Harold Land on tenor, flute, and oboe, plus Joe Sample on keys is the stuff of magic. The first two tracks alone transport you to another world. It’s an album full of just the right amount of openness, keeping time only with intermittently spaced piano chords. Mickey Roker’s cymbals at the head of “Procession” are a cascading over me like diamonds as I type this. With a few themes that step over into fusion (or whatever u wanna call it) territory, the entire work (all member originals) for me, is a meditation on the gradual unfolding of time and the early morning colors and energy of springtime on the California coast and of nature 🌞

Pictured here is the official Blue Note 2023 audiophile reissue, mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent. Grab it while you still can. Highly 🚬✌️recommended.

🏅 PT. 4 of 3🏅

We obviously couldn’t just shoutout three albums from 2022 😂 So here’s one more little round-up in case you missed any of these outstanding projects. Ranging from electronic, folk, world, country, experimental, tribal, and of course a healthy dose of jazz.

We can’t wait for all the music coming in 2023 🤠 Yee-haw!

🧨 A.R. Wilson - Old Gold (Impatience) — Andrew Wilson’s nuanced retelling of the 1850s Victoria gold rush made up of MIDI banjos and artificial sounds. Favorite morning album to start the day.

🧨 Gerry Franke – Found Myself or Just I'm Dead (Tax Free) — Franke is armed with a variety of guitars, basses, synths, and at least one trusty sampler through which he outlines his forms. Best album title.

🧨 Jack J – Opening The Door (Mood Hut) — Mood Hut co-founder’s full-length debut (first release in 7 years) is a lighthearted collection of deep house, dub, yacht rock, and ambient sketches.

🧨 Ron Trent Presents Warm – What Do The Stars Say To You (Night Time Stories) — The veteran Chicago master’s hybrid of house, disco, jazz, and new age. Guests from Khruangbin to Jean-Luc Ponty.

🧨 Robert Glasper – Black Radio III (Loma Vista) — Glasper gets deep Into ‘this R&B sh*t’ as he strives for community and renewal. H.E.R., Ty Dolla $ign, among guests.

🧨 Brian Eno – Foreverandevernomore (Opal) — Confronting climate crisis, the veteran experimentalist takes a new approach: he gets in touch with his feelings.

🧨 Nduduzo Makhathini - In The Spirit Of Ntu (Blue Note) — Spectacular first dispatch from Blue Note Africa (that’s right, look it up). An ocean of intelligent, emotional, soul-nourishing music.

🧨 Joel Ross – The Parable Of The Poet (Blue Note) — Third album (our favorite so far) by vibraphonist Joel Ross, supported by Immanuel Wilkins, Maria Grand, among others.

🧨 Wayne Shorter, Terri Lyne Carrington, Leo Genovese, Esperanza Spalding – Live At The Detroit Jazz Festival (Candid) — A set by multi-generational jazz super group. At last, the rest of us get to enjoy this blow-minding performance.

🧨 Donald Byrd – Cookin' At Montreux (Blue Note) — Donald Byrd’s smokin’ 1973 performance with ten piece band. A must have.

🏅 PT. 1 of 3 🏅

Not a “best of” but over the next few weeks we’ll be highlighting some albums released in 2022 that we’ve visited over and over again. Here’s the first one!

The Kahil El’Zabar Quartet’s “A Time For Healing” landed in February of this year and we recently picked it up on a tip from a great selector. Recorded in December 2020 in Chicago, the jazz luminary (whose work spans more than five decades) leads an ensemble of enviable upcoming talent on his fourth album for the label. The lineup includes trumpet player, bells shaker and spirit bowl percussionist Corey Wilkes. Returning collaborator and seasoned keyboardist Justin Dillard plays a rich subtle blend of dappled, dotted, and eased grooves. Rounding the circle with serenaded, rasping reeds on both tenor and soprano saxophone is Isaiah Collier. All three can also be heard joining , picking up a number of percussive instruments that rattle, chime, and vibrate as their bandleader switches between the drums, earth drum, cajon, kalimba, while periodically intoning his contemplated, Last Poets like vocal mantras.

An album with a message for the world right now is exactly what El’Zabar and his quartet have on offer: A Time for Healing.

Pictured here is the second run vinyl edition, sounding wonderful, well recorded and mastered. You can still snag it on 👀
