I want to share a piece I made for a friend who has supported me and Lui Jewelry for years.

She loves bright colors, especially pinks and yellows, and has a personality to match. Whenever I make something for her, she usually tells me what she likes, gives me a general idea of what she wants, and then lets me run with it creatively.

As a fellow small business owner, she’s always understood the value of handmade work. She’s never questioned my pricing or rushed my process. She simply trusts me and supports what I do, even during times when my business was much quieter.

This necklace is very much her: bright, bold, colorful and full of personality. 💗✨

And I’m very lucky to have friends who believe in what I make.

I · THE HEART — DESIRE

Before anything can become, it must first be felt.

The heart holds what words cannot.
Pain, joy, longing, relief.

Some feelings pass through us.
Others ask us to become something different.

Hand-carved ruby, finished in 14k gold.

II · THE MATCH — DECISION

Before anything can become, there is a decision.

The match holds the possibility.
The strike gives it direction.

Hand-carved jasper and ruby, finished in 14k gold.

The rosebud is now live.
I can’t get over beautiful it turned out to be. One thing about being a designer is bringing things to live. From concept to 2d and now an actual rose pendant.

I had so many doubts while carving this rose. I worried it might turn out ugly. I worried it might look tacky. There were so many little moments when I questioned whether the idea I had in my head would actually translate into stone and gold.

But this came out better than I imagined.
she came out perfect. 🌹

I · THE HEART — Desire

I think most change begins with wanting.

Not necessarily wanting a person or a thing, but that quiet feeling that pulls you toward something different. Sometimes you know exactly what it is. Sometimes you don’t. You just know that something in you has started to move.

That’s what the Heart represents to me in MORPHE.

It comes before the Match, before the decision is made. It’s the desire that makes you question where you are, imagine what could be, and eventually choose.

I carved each little anatomical heart individually from ruby, so every one comes out slightly different. I actually love that about them. Hearts aren’t supposed to be identical.

And I wanted the clasp to be part of that idea too. Each Heart is finished with a 14k gold push-in clasp, so it isn’t permanently tied to one chain or one way of being worn. It can move, change, and become part of something else.

Maybe that’s what desire is.

The first little pull toward becoming something different.

MORPHĒ · The Ruby Collection
II · MATCH
Decision

Ruby tipped, hand carved Imperial Jasper matchstick in 14k yellow gold.

Before something changes, there is usually a decision.

Sometimes it’s carefully thought through. Sometimes it comes after staying somewhere too long. And sometimes it’s simply the moment you realize you can’t keep doing things the same way.

That’s what the match represents to me.

A match holds so much possibility in something so small. It can sit untouched forever, but the moment you strike it, there’s no returning it to what it was before.

I carved this piece from ruby as that moment in MORPHĒ.

The decision that starts the transformation.

MORPHĒ
The Ruby Collection

I’ve spent a lot of this past year learning what it means to begin again.

Some changes happen all at once. Others are so quiet you don’t realize you’ve changed until you look back and no longer recognize the version of yourself you were trying so hard to hold onto.

I started carving this collection somewhere in between those two places.

This is III · Rosebud
Renewal.

I’m sharing the ending first.

A rosebud felt right because renewal, to me, isn’t a flower already in bloom. It’s that small, uncertain moment before, when something has survived enough to begin opening again.

Each piece in MORPHĒ is carved from ruby and represents a different point in that transformation. I’ll be sharing the other two pieces, and more of the story behind them, soon.

For now, this is where I wanted to begin. 🌹

III · Rosebud
Hand carved ruby · 14k gold
Carved by hand in Alameda, California

Rosebud, alongside the other two pieces from MORPHĒ, will be available to view in person at the Chuseok Festival on September 26 at the Presidio in San Francisco.

I’m really excited to finally let these pieces exist somewhere outside of my studio and to share the full story together.

There are some pieces I’ve kept close because I never quite knew how to tell the story they carried.

Last Thanksgiving, Andrew was in hospice while I was away, in the midst of my divorce. His sister Isabelle called and told me that if I wanted to see him, I needed to come soon. I flew home to San Francisco.

Around that time, his wife Rachel told me that Andrew wanted to choose something for his daughter, Vesper.

This was one of the necklace he chose.

He said it reminded him of an astronaut.

Andrew was one of the earliest people to believe in my work. He and his family were part of some of my most formative years in San Francisco. They supported me, celebrated with me, welcomed me into their home, and made me feel there was always a place for me.

Andrew was the kind of friend who simply showed up. He helped me move a mattress, build furniture, and let me take over his home to host dinner parties. When I found myself in a dangerous situation, he drove four hours to Mendocino to bring me home, Taco Bell in hand, and sat with me through the darkness that followed.

Life eventually carried us in different directions, which made knowing that he was still thinking of my work in his final days all the more difficult to put into words.

I’ve learned to hold my head high through difficult things. I’ve never been very comfortable letting sadness take up space in a room, and when Andrew passed, I wanted more than anything to be useful to the people around me. Everyone was mourning, and somehow it felt easier to keep my own grief private.

But grief has a way of finding the quiet. Some nights I find myself scrolling through old photographs, and suddenly my heart aches for my friend in a way I can no longer keep composed.

Jewelry can become a quiet archive of our lives, carrying the people and memories that surround it.

This one carries Andrew.

For Vesper, chosen by her dad. 🤍

Seeing the lovely scarlet delemeny () wearing Lui Jewelry for such a happy chapter. 🥹🤍✨

And yes… before these earrings left my studio, they were dipped in Florida water AND holy water.

Because sometimes a jewelry box simply isn’t enough. 😂

A little sparkle, a little blessing, a little extra protection from any ✨uninvited energy✨.

Looking at these photos, I’d say they did their job. 😂🤍

So happy to see you this happy, Scarlet and even happier that Lui Jewelry got to be a tiny part of it. 🥂✨
