Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) is packed with unforgettable characters, but few are quite as sinister as Major Arnold Toht, played brilliantly by Ronald Lacey.
The black coat, the glasses, that creepy little smile… Toht doesn’t need to shout or throw punches to be intimidating. As a ruthless Gestapo agent working with the N***s to hunt down the Ark of the Covenant, he’s the perfect opposite to Indiana Jones — cold, calculating and thoroughly unpleasant.
And then there’s THAT final scene when the Ark is opened… 😳🔥💀
More than 40 years later, Raiders of the Lost Ark remains one of the greatest adventure movies ever made, and Toht is still one of its most memorable villains.
