Clement Nursery

Clement Nursery San Francisco's oldest nursery, housed in the historic buildings of 1904 dairy farm. The greenhouse is once again, a greenhouse. I'm Phillip. It's 80th.

Housed in some of the Richmond district's oldest structures, the 1904 dairy farm barn and stables and cottage have been restored. But three months into our venture, discoveries are still being made every day, like a watering tank for cattle, hidden under 73 year old plywood flooring. I've brought old farm back to life. With respect, with awe, and with whimsy. And I have the privilege of taking Clement Nursery into the next decade. Get ready to be inspired, to learn, and to grow with me. Welcome back to Clement Nursery. Founded in 1941. Reopening soon.

One of our carnivorous pinguicula set its goals extremely high today.

You can see the smaller insects that she’s very successfully lured, trapped and currently digesting on its sticky, glandular leaves.

We went looking for tweezers to free this moth, but it was able to finally free itself before we returned.

We hope your labor day weekend is just as exciting!

We’ll be open tomorrow on Labor Day from 10 - 5.

My inner horticulturist sees a Lithops Pseudotruncatella from Namibia, pushing out a bloom between its single pair of opposing leaves.

My inner child sees a butt trumpet.

While we’re a day late in celebrating International Dog Day, we celebrate dogs every day at Clement Nursery.

There’s almost always one here, and all others are welcomed. Cats as well :)

In 1968, my family of five drove 450 miles from Abilene Texas to Ciudad Juárez Mexico in a 1964 Volkswagen Beetle.

We returned the following day with three sombreros, three pinatas, a 2 1/2 foot long wooden ship with gold velvet sails, and a welded iron wall art set consisting of a saxophone, and this guitar. In a 1964 Volkswagen Beetle.

Personal artifacts in your garden make it all the more soulful and healing. I’m reminded of that hilarious family vacation every time I catch Saint Francis in the corner of my eye.

This Recology-bound 1970’s wagon seems as sad to go, as I was having to finally let her go.

Because of her experience with wheels, I told her she might come back as a sports car.

Heuchera are almost exclusively from North America, found on rocky cliff faces in California to the seeps of North Carolina’s Great Smoky Mountains, with some distribution in Mexico and East Russia.

Commonly called alumroot and coral bells, all of these will develop tall bracts with bell-like flowers through the fall.

Hybridization has created a stunning range of leaf color and variegations. They thrive in shady areas, but as you can see, also love the early morning and late afternoon sun here at the nursery.

Happy Pride Weekend! Let’s all put out vibes for a break from the fog.

We just met a man that worked at the nursery 25 years ago, who confirmed that the proprietor then was gay. As were the couple that purchased the shop from him, and myself as the owner for the past 12 years.

That makes Clement Nursery a gay-owned and operated San Francisco business for 30 of it’s 89-year history!

We are proud to keep this San Francisco institution thriving, and are honored by your support.

Eleven days old and out of the nest!

It was chaos today as the four Dark Eyed Junco chicks fledged this morning. Their flight is limited to a foot or so, so they were running and hopping everywhere in the nursery.

I rescued this one at the curb that had left the shop and was heading for Clement Street, and a second time he got caught between two nestled nursery pots.

We are both filthy, and exhausted.

After an Agave bloomed in my home garden last year, a seed must have fallen into this pinecone from a tree towering above.

I discovered this seedling while gardening this morning, perfectly content with everything life has dealt it so far.

Where there’s a will there’s a way.
