About Dear Dear
Winner of the 2025 Louise Bogan Award, selected by Randall Mann, Reuben Gelley Newman’s Dear Dear renders q***r love through the lens of music, art, nature, and politics. Drawing on artists from Bach to Mitski, Gelley Newman flirts with nostalgia but refuses to dwell in the past, asking how remembering our ancestors can reinvigorate our present struggles. In these poems, sound becomes the language of desire and self-expression: “I want to do better / I want to be the husband of the song.” Combining playful sonnets and earnest narratives, Dear Dear searches for belonging in our grief-stricken world.

Two events next week!

First, July 15, Jake Skeets and Beth Piatote celebrate their latest poetry collections, Horses and Distant Water, both out now from Milkweed Editions. Then on Friday, 7/17, the legendary Gary Phillips joins us for his latest novel, The Haul, publishing next week from Soho Press. This event is presented in Alta Journal, and Phillips will be in conversation with Alta's executive director Blaise Zerega. A perfect book for the summer.

Juneteenth is a day of jubilation, and so we hope that those attending today’s SF parade and celebration have a great time!

This Juneteenth, we’re also thinking about our friends at the Prisoners Literature Project and the work that they do to support incarcerated people on their reading journeys. We’re thinking about mass incarceration and its disproportionate effect on Black Americans. We’re thinking about the liberatory capabilities of books for all of us, but especially what it means for people on the inside.

The Prisoners Literature Project sends highly-requested books to incarcerated readers in California and throughout the U.S. They keep up with the ever-changing (and often arbitrary) rules about what books are allowed inside. They take the time to correspond with people and package and ship those requested books. And they’ve been doing it for over 40 years!

We are one of several PLP bookstore partners. We have a permanent display in-store with rotating books depending on reader requests. It’s easy to donate books to an incarcerated reader: find a book on the display, let us know at the register you would like to donate the book to the PLP, and we’ll send it their way.

We’re grateful for all of the work the Prisoners Literature Project does, and for support from customers like you who make it possible for us to contribute to that work. Books open doors!
