Unpopular opinion: Asking a small business for a sponsorship or donation isn’t “supporting small business” if the only time you support that business is when you need something from them.

I’m probably going to p**s some people off with this one, but it needs to be said. Small businesses get asked CONSTANTLY to sponsor teams, donate to fundraisers, give gift certificates, provide products, discount orders, donate shirts… the list goes on and on. And we’re happy to support our community. We WANT to support our community. But here’s the part nobody likes talking about: How often do you support those same businesses when you DON’T need something?

If you’re asking the local apparel decorator to donate $500 to your organization, but you ordered your last 200 shirts online because you saved a couple bucks, are you really supporting local? If you’re asking a restaurant for a $100 gift card for your fundraiser, but never eat there, how is that a partnership? If you’re asking a local business to sponsor your kid’s team, but you’ve never bought anything from them, recommended them, shared their posts, or sent them a customer… what exactly are they getting out of this “support?”

Supporting small business can’t only happen when you need the small business to support YOU.

I’m curious what the other small business owners on here think. Have you ever gotten a sponsorship or donation request that made you think, “You’ve literally never supported my business… but now you want me to support yours?” And on the flip side, what makes you WANT to say yes when someone asks?

When you support a small business… it’s never just a $20 order.

That $20 just bought dinner for the night.
That $50 covered a kid’s school supplies.
That $100 helped pay the electric bill.

This isn’t a giant corporation where your money disappears into a boardroom bonus.
This is someone’s dream, livelihood, and everyday life.

Behind every order is a deep breath of relief.
A “thank God.”
A “we’re gonna be okay.”

So if you’ve ever supported my business whether it was a purchase, a share, or a referral—you’ve done more than you know.🖤✨

Somebody asked me last week why they should use a local print shop when they can order the same thing online for less.

Fair question. Here's my honest answer.

You probably can get it cheaper online. I'm not gonna pretend otherwise.

What you can't get online is somebody who opens your file, sees that your logo is 72 dpi and stretched sideways, and calls you before printing 200 of them.

You can't get somebody who knows the shirt color you picked is gonna make your dark navy ink disappear from ten feet away.

You can't get somebody who'll tell you the truth when your idea isn't gonna work, and then help you fix it.

That's not a service you can put in a shopping cart. It's just somebody caring whether your thing turns out good.

We've reprinted jobs at our own cost because I didn't like how they came out and the customer hadn't even noticed yet. Not because it's good business. Because my name's on it.
