With the current Road closure at 6th and Jackson, and the State of the Omicron/Covid Variant, Nikaku WIll be closed this week, and we will reopen on Friday January 21st. Thank you for all of your support during these times, and we hope that you and yours stay safe.

Nikaku will be open Monday December 23rd from 10:00 to 3:00 and the 24th from 10:00 to 5:30. We will be closed December 25, and will resume regular hours on the 26th.

Origin: Mashiko-mashi, Tochigi Prefecture
For many people the ceramic town of Mashiko is linked with the potter Shoji Hamada(1894-1978) and Bernard Leach(1887-1979). Leach, a British Potter who eventually settled in England's St. Ives in Cornwell, and Hamada designated a Living National Treasure worked with others including Soetsu Yanagi and other to promulgate the virtues of mingai, or folkcraft of which Mashiko ware became a prime example.
The distinctive folkcraft appearance and the modest simplicity of Mashiko make it an appealing tableware. At present the kilns are producing primarily large platters, bowls and bottles.
