One of one super rare 26” x 22” reverse painted glass light up Iron Fireman sign. Iron Fireman is out of Portland Oregon and still in business. Over the years I have seen very few Iron Fireman signs sell usually bringing good money at I have never seen a light up glass one. The glass on this sign is super thin and I am blown away that it’s still intact. That’s probably why I can’t find a picture of another one. I do not want to ship this sign for local pick up. While digging through an old trunk in a San Luis Obispo house, I pulled out a 1953 Cal Poly football jersey.

1953 was a formative year for the Cal Poly football program. Under new head coach Leroy Hughes, the team went 9 and 0. Slide 6 shows Hughes on the right. As I compared old team photos and archives, I realized this jersey looks like it belonged to player #12 Eddie Chang, pictured in slide 14.

Coach Hughes went on to coach Bobby Beathard and John Madden who both became NFL Hall of Famers. To stumble on a piece of that early history tucked away in a forgotten trunk feels unreal.

A little slice of SLO sports history found its way back into the light.
