Last but not least for this weekend’s local artists spotlight, we’ve got Secret Scene and their brand new record!

Secret Scene - Secret Scene

Highlight: Minutes, Secret Scene, Wake Up Dreaming

This new release from San Diego post-rock band, Secret Scene is an atmospheric affair. The album breathes a rather melancholy air into the room, catching the listener in driving rhythms, airy vocals, and waves of guitar. Getting lost in this music is an easy feat, but a closer listen will reveal the fantastic musicianship and attention to detail the band put into these 8 tracks. Recorded by Ben Moore at Singing Serpent in San Diego and mastered by Chicago Mastering straight from 2 inch tape, fans of the genre should give this group a try!

Following our first post highlighting local artists in the shop, we’ve got producer and beatsmith, Goomson!

Goomson and Broke - Heavy Wreck

Boom bap, instrumental hip hop, underground hip hop

Highlights: Large, Gettin There, All For One, Jazz Messenger, Heat of the Desert

Using others’ art in sampling to create a brand new work of your own is truly a skill not many can say they can fully grasp. Goomson shows that not only is he capable, but he does it with gritty finesse that gives love to those who came before him, while maintaining a sound that is wholly and authentically his. With this sample-heavy, boom bap affair, made entirely on an Akai S900 and Akai MPC2000XL, you’ll find yourself nodding your head to the funky, jazzed-out tracks almost immediately. This project is rooted firmly in the underground, showing off beats that conjure up images of late night cruising down the streets of your city, giving you the setting while leaving enough room for your mind to fill in the blanks. A great set of 12 cuts that sound fresh no matter what era you want to try to plant it in. Forget the lo-fi beats to chill and study to, come to the shop, pick up this record, and get lost!

Hey everyone! This weekend, we’re trying to highlight a few of the local artists and bands you’ll be able to find in the shop. First up is Celebrity Telethon!

Celebrity Telethon - Celebrity Telethon

For fans of: The Ruby Records catalogue, The Rolling Stones, The Modern Lovers

Highlights: Skin Flicks, Film Noir, Latkes and Brisket (featuring Jo Dog Almeida of Dogs D’Amour), The Rumours Are True

A throwback of sorts on one hand. A torch bearer of a sound all their own on the other. As soon as you think you’ve got this band’s sound pegged, the next track comes on and you have to rethink everything you were expecting to hear. This self-recorded and self-released album has got a little bit of everything. There’s a callback to LA’s cowpunk scene, there’s glammed out rockers in the spirit of Marc Bolan, and a song that feels like the love child of Jonathan Richman and David Berman. Don’t get it twisted though: this is in no ways a tribute album. It’s a fresh take on a sound many people in Southern California are familiar with, but if you want to hear some new energy injected straight to the heart of the genre, you have to give this record a spin. Come into the shop to pick up a copy featuring scratchboard artwork from San Marcos cartoonist, Mark Habegger (you may see a family tie if you read the liner notes) and a zine featuring art and writing from the band.

Also be on the look out for a show at Tower Bar this November and a new album on the horizon!

Late post, but too good not to share! Heavy hitters hitting the CD shelf now! The first photo of CDs all have individual prices, but the second photo will all be $4 or 3 for $10, just like the rest of the CD wall! You can find most of these next to the Steely Dan CDs! Open until 9PM tonight and 1PM-9PM during the weekday and 9AM-9PM during the weekend! Come dig!
