Joe DeYong (1894-1975)
LA SERANATA

In September 1926, De Yong moved to Santa Barbara, California, where he worked alongside Edward Borein and Maynard Dixon. He was the official artist of the rancheros visitadores, an equestrian social club in Santa Barbara.

Ludmilla Welch (1867-1925)
LA CUMBRE TRAIL, SANTA BARBARA

As a teenager, Ludmilla met the artist Thaddeus Welch, despite a twenty-three year age difference, the couple was married in 1883. The couple eventually settled in Marin County and then Santa Barbara, where they developed a loyal patronage. The two often painted side by side.

Reva Jackman (1886-1985)

Jackman Studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Academié Julian in Paris. She worked in Paris in the 1920-30"s. It is unclear when she moved to Santa Barbara, but she died here at age 99. Part of THE SANTA BARBARA SHOW at Lost Horizon Bookstore

CHANNING PEAKE (1910-1989) RHYTHM (Mermaid) circa 1940. Local favorite, Peake studied at the Santa Barbara School of Arts in the 1920-30’s. There are “multiple connections between Channing Peake, Rico Lebrun, and Howard Warshaw, stretching from New York to Los Angeles. Despite having different styles and thematic interests, the three men shared a humanistic orientation toward art, and they all employed a Cubist framework for the spatial organization of their paintings... In 1958 Channing Peake and Howard Warshaw won a competition to design a large mural for the Santa Barbara Public Library. HOWARD WARSHAW (1920-1977). “When Warshaw joined the faculty of the art department at the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1955, he was already a painter with an established national and international reputation...
As an artist, perhaps his greatest achievements are his murals...The University of California commissioned him to do murals on four of its campuses, including UCSB. (He also painted one) at the Santa Barbara Public Library...It was characteristic of Howard Warshaw that when his terminal illness became known and the University Art Gallery wanted to honor him with an exhibition of his paintings and drawings, he suggested that the show be devoted to works of his former students. His concern was, and always has been, not so much for his own reputation as for the healthy and sound tradition of the craft to which he had dedicated himself...He died on the day that this show honoring him as a teacher opened.”- from obituary by Regents of University of California
