A September of Tending and Trust

Perhaps the invitation of this late-month Full Moon is simply this: to meet uncertainty with steadiness, to tend what is within our reach, and to keep imagining the future we hope to help create—while trusting that life is still unfolding in ways we cannot yet fully see.

In a time like this, it is only human to feel worry, doubt, fear, rage, sorrow. There is room for all of it.

And still, we have some choice in how we occupy the helm of our own awareness.

Can we make space within ourselves for both grief and gratitude?

Can we tend lovingly to what hurts without allowing it to become the whole story?

Can we continue to notice what is alive, what is beautiful, what is asking for our care?

Perhaps September is not a month for forcing answers.

Perhaps it is a month for tending.

For strengthening the roots beneath what matters.
For caring for what is already growing.
For sowing small seeds toward the world we long to see flourish.

And for trusting that not everything needs to be known before we take the next faithful step.

AUGUST FIELD NOTE
Before August disappears, notice what this season gave you.
A plant you met.
A place you returned to.
Something you tasted.
Something you gathered.
Something that bloomed.
Something that dried.
Something you released.
Something quietly beginning.
You don’t need to make meaning from all of it.
Simply notice.
This is one of the things the natural world keeps teaching me:
A season doesn’t have to remain in order to have changed us.

The Sturgeon Moon carries the feeling of something ancient rising from deep water.

A reminder that not all growth happens where we can see it.
Some things strengthen quietly beneath the surface, gathering themselves before they emerge.

Tonight, I’m honoring what has endured.
What is still becoming.
And what no longer needs to be pushed before its time.

PLANT DEVOTION: DESERT HEART
PLANT DEVOTION · CISTUS
Most perfumes are compositions.
Many plants are brought together to create something new.
But sometimes I don’t want to move on to the next plant.
I want to stay.
That impulse became the Plant Devotion collection.
One plant explored through its different expressions.
For Desert Heart, that plant is Cistus.
Cistus.
Labdanum.
Rock Rose.
Different expressions of one botanical relationship—aromatic, resinous and energetic.
Rather than asking:
What else should I add?
Plant Devotion asks:
What more is there to notice here?
Sometimes depth doesn’t come from adding more.
Sometimes it comes from staying with one thing long enough for it to reveal itself.

Something has been quietly taking shape inside Flora Deva.
For years, I thought I was making many different things.
Perfumes.
Flower essences.
Herbal teas.
Field notes.
Stories.
Botanical preparations.
But increasingly, they don’t feel separate.
They feel like different pages from the same field notebook.
So I’ve begun calling this larger body of work:

At its heart is a question I seem to return to again and again:
What happens when we begin paying attention to the living world around us?
Perhaps healing doesn’t always begin with changing something.

The Plant Came First

Today I was making lip balm.

Not inventing a new product. Not developing a new collection. Just doing what happens at an apothecary worktable: melting wax, working with botanical oils, filling a tube, letting it cool, testing it, and adjusting the formulation.

The first test was too waxy.

So I added more oil.

Another tube. Another wait. Another test.

Still a little too waxy.

And then I reached for a jar of chickweed-infused olive oil.

That jar had been waiting for me.

Months ago, I was walking past chickweed when I had one of those unmistakable moments I have learned not to dismiss.

Harvest me.
Preserve my medicine for future use.

There was no lip balm in my mind.

There wasn’t a product plan or an ingredient list waiting to be completed. I simply gathered the chickweed, preserved it in olive oil, and put it on the apothecary shelf.

And waited.

Today, I understood why.

The chickweed oil was exactly what the formulation needed. I added it, tested again, adjusted again, and eventually arrived at that lovely balance between enough beeswax to hold a balm in its tube and enough botanical oil to let it glide beautifully across the lips.

Chickweed now sits alongside calendula, lavender and elderflower in the finished balm.

There is something about this process that feels important to me.

We often imagine making a botanical product as a linear process:

Decide what to make.
Choose the ingredients.
Develop the formula.
Make the product.

But Flora Deva doesn’t always happen that way.

Sometimes it begins with an encounter.

Plant → attention → harvest → preservation → waiting → recognition → formulation.

The plant comes first.

The purpose reveals itself later.

A SMALL FIELD PRACTICE FOR THE WEEKEND
The next time you walk outside, choose one plant you normally pass without noticing.
You don’t need to know its name.
In fact, don’t look it up yet.
Just observe it.
What shape does it make?
Where has it chosen to grow?
What grows beside it?
Is it flowering?
Making seeds?
Drying?
Beginning again?
Has an insect found it?
What happens when the wind moves through it?
Stay for a moment longer than you normally would.
There is something beautiful about allowing a living thing to exist before we decide what to call it.
Observation is the beginning of relationship.
