Thank you to everyone who made it a packed house at the store tonight to hear from Dr. Anthony Goodman about his book, Great Saves and Terrible Losses: The Journeys of a Surgeon. The evening was informative, eye-opening, thoughtful, and heartfelt.

In this book Dr. Goodman recounts memorable events from his career as a surgeon from 1967 to 1993, before miracles such as CAT scans, MRIs, and minimally invasive surgery. This riveting memoir follows Dr. Goodman through a career that took him around the world, through his retirement from the practice of surgery and into his second career as a professor and author.

He also reveals his approach to coping with his mild Alzheimer’s diagnosis, as not only a patient but now as a well-educated MD with a steep curve learning about the ever-changing nature of this disease, its impact as well as pathology, and options for management.

Dr. Goodman graduated from Harvard, earned his medical degree from Cornell Medical College, and trained as a surgical intern and resident at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. Among his years of practicing, he served as a surgeon with the US Army Medical Corps during the Vietnam War and on Project HOPE’s hospital ship in Jamaica.

Join us as we host Mario T. García, distinguished professor of Chicano studies and history at UC Santa Barbara, for his new book, Rupert García: The Making of an American Artist - A Testimonio. Tuesday, August 4 at 6:00pm.

This is the first biography of the renowned American Chicano visual artist and activist Rupert García, drawing on fifty hours of interviews conducted over thirty years and accompanied by eighty images. This in-depth oral history gives an unparalleled look at García’s life and work, tracing his evolution as an artist and the political upheavals that shaped his life and worldview.

Mario T. García’s testimonio places Rupert García’s art in historical perspective, from his beginnings as a working-class Mexican American from California’s Central Valley, coming of age in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, his involvement in the antiwar movement during the San Francisco State student strike in 1968-69, and his participation in the Chicano Movement and beyond. Influenced by history and politics, García’s vital works of art represent a changing world through the eyes of an artist, speaking to issues of poverty, racism, capitalism, war, and the role of the artist in society.

Thank you to Paul Skokowski, author and executive director of the Center for the Explanation of Consciousness at Stanford University, and local psychiatrist Dr John Cervantes for a fascinating and informative conversation around Skokowski's book Sensing Qualia: Solving the Hard Problem of Consciousness.

About the Book
Philosophers of mind and neuroscientists often debate what they call the hard problem of consciousness, that is, how we might account for qualia—our subjective experiences of phenomena like color, taste, pain, smell, and more. In Sensing Qualia, Skokowski surveys the most influential theories of mind since Descartes in order to establish a new theory he calls sensory naturalism, which recognizes the senses as natural detectors of physical properties in the world.

Drawing on neuroscience, physics, and philosophy, Skokowski provides a naturalistic framework for studying qualia in the physical world and explores the limits of qualia in androids and AI. The result is a compelling explanation for anyone curious about the nature of conscious experience in humans and AI.
