how much caffeine is actually in matcha?
it depends.
here’s what the science says.
matcha typically contains around 19–44 mg of caffeine per gram, though the exact amount varies.
serving size changes the picture quickly: 1 g and 4 g of matcha are very different caffeine doses.
for perspective, an 8 oz brewed coffee contains about 95 mg of caffeine. a typical matcha serving can fall within a similar range.
the caffeine molecule in matcha is the same caffeine found elsewhere. matcha also naturally contains L-theanine, which has been studied alongside caffeine for attention and cognitive performance.
there isn’t one universal caffeine number for matcha. cultivar, shading, growing conditions, harvest and processing can all influence the finished tea.
caffeine content doesn’t determine matcha quality. if you want to understand how much caffeine you’re drinking, start with the amount of matcha used.
