Mad Rock HQ

Mad Rock HQ LA County's only specialty climbing store. Established in 2002

--In 2002, Young Chu started a new brand, "Mad Rock".

Young's success in shoe design compelled him to continue designing, and together with his passion for rock climbing a focus on designing affordable rock climbing shoes seemed the best avenue.

Tight and downsized climbing shoes can improve performance, but wearing them for too long can come with a cost.

We’re back with Dr. Miguel Zevallos, PT, DPT to discuss how repeated time in a compressed toe position may contribute to calluses, bunions, reduced mobility, and changes around the big-toe joint.

Not every physical change means pain or injury, but maintaining movement still matters. What to watch for: a big toe that is getting less mobile, forefoot pain that lingers after sessions, and recurring nail or callus issues. Early stiffness is the easiest thing to maintain against, which is the whole point of keeping mobility here.

A few simple habits can help:
• Take your shoes off between attempts
• Give your toes time to move and relax
• Use exercises like towel scrunches to maintain foot strength and mobility

Your climbing shoes should support your performance, not keep your feet compressed for the entire session.

A climbing shoe can be the right size and still be the wrong fit.

We’re back with Dr. Miguel Zevallos, PT, DPT to break down why heel fit may be the most important part of choosing a climbing shoe.

Think of your heel as the wrist of your foot. It acts as the anchor point that allows you to transfer force through your toes. If the heel is loose or moving inside the shoe, you lose stability, power, and control.

A snug heel should stay secure when pulling, especially during heel hooks. The goal isn’t just a tighter shoe. It’s finding the right shape and volume for your foot.

The right climbing shoe depends on the terrain.

We’re back again with Dr. Miguel Zevallos, PT, DPT

Soft, flatter shoes help distribute pressure across slabs and volumes, while aggressive shoes concentrate force through the toe on steeper terrain.

Choosing the right shoe for the climb can improve performance and play an important role in injury prevention.

Most climbing injuries don’t happen from one bad move. They happen from thousands of small ones. This is especially true when it comes to foot based injuries.

In this first video, Miguel dives into how proper footwork and climbing shoe fit can influence injury risk over time.

We cover:
• Why using more rubber on the wall matters
• How shoe design changes force through your foot
• Common technique mistakes that can contribute to overuse injuries
• Why today’s coordination-heavy climbing is leading to more foot injuries

The goal isn’t to climb cautiously. It’s to climb smarter, stay healthy, and spend more time on the wall.
