How tight is too tight when it comes to climbing shoes?

We’re back with Dr. Miguel Zevallos, PT, DPT to talk about downsizing and the tradeoff between performance and long-term foot mobility.

A tighter shoe can help create a more secure fit and allow you to transfer more force through the big toe. But repeatedly loading the toe while it stays compressed and stiff may contribute to discomfort, reduced mobility, and changes around the big-toe joint over time.

One thing that’s easy to overlook: professional climbers pushing extreme shoe fits often have physios and recovery routines helping them maintain their bodies off the wall.

And with newer shoe technology, extreme downsizing may not be as necessary as it once was.

The goal isn’t the smallest shoe you can tolerate. It’s finding the right balance between performance, fit, and keeping your feet moving well.

How much do you downsize your climbing shoes? Let us know below. 👇
