Artist Bio: Brian Martinez Dawson

Brian Martinez-Dawson is a Spanish Market silversmith hailing from the vibrant artist community of Santa Fe, New Mexico. His work not only reflects his deep-rooted connection to his native Santa Fe but also exemplifies the rich traditions of Spanish Colonial Artistry and his Mentor and best friend, Lawrence Baca. Born and raised in Santa Fe, Brian's journey as a

silversmith began at a very young age, as he was captivated by the intricate craftsmanship of his Uncle's jewelry. His Uncle, Arnold Martinez was a silversmith in the 70's and he instilled in Brian a passion for the art form and a commitment to preserving and advancing the traditions of his heritage. In the early 90's Brian once again found himself watching a Master silversmith when his friend and neighbor Lawrence Baca began his silversmith journey. In the early days, Lawrence's studio was set up in a room of his house and it ended up a gathering place for family and friends to come and see Lawrence's latest creation. In 2014 Brian began an apprenticeship with Lawrence. Brian started out by carving and painting the hearts for his Sacred Heart line. Eventually it transitioned into a full time apprenticeship and in 2018 and Lawrence began teaching Brian all aspects of silver work. This culminated with Brian being juried into the Traditional Spanish Market in 2022 under Lawrence's mentorship. Brian was very fortunate to have known Lawrence for 30+ years and call him his best friend, teacher and mentor. Brian and Spanish Market Master Artist and fellow band member, Juanito Jimenez, were fortunate enough to spend the last day with him before he passed. Brian is committed to continue pay tribute to Lawrence through the traditions, style and creativity he was honored to receive from him. As a juried Spanish Market Artist, Brian Martinez Dawson has exhibited his work at some of the most prestigious art events in the Southwest. His pieces have consistently garnered acclaim for their exquisite craftsmanship and cultural significance.
