We just wanted to remind you of some garden necessities, the Lunar Planting Schedule, and that we have a fresh stock of gardening supplies to help you along the way!
June 24th – 26th: Excellent window for planting seed beds and leafy vegetables like lettuce, cabbage, and cauliflower.June 27th – 28th: "Barren" days. Skip planting and focus on weeding, clearing land, or general farm maintenance.June 29th – 30th: Highly favorable days for planting root crops, such as late beets, potatoes, and carrots
General Garden Maintenance Tasks
Support Plants: Now is the time to tie up tomatoes, cucumbers, and other fast-growing vining plants as they stretch upward to keep them off the soil and maximize sunlight.Feeding: Feed flowering annuals and fruiting vegetables as needed to support blooms and fruiting.Sun/Heat Prep: With Santa Fe's intense summer sun, ensure your leafy greens in seed beds get some afternoon shade.
Broccoli & Cauliflower: Transplant healthy starter plugs outdoors by July 7th to beat early freezes.Peas: Direct sow seeds into the soil around July 12th.Carrots & Beets: Direct sow seeds between mid-July and the end of July.Leafy Greens & Asian Greens: Direct sow kale, chard, spinach, arugula, and bok choy throughout August.Garlic: Plant individual cloves between September and October so they can form deep roots before winter.
The high elevation in Northern NM area intensifies ultraviolet rays, rapidly drying out soil.
Erect 30% to 50% Shade Cloth: Mount woven cloth over delicate summer sprouts and cool-season greens to prevent sunscorch.Layer 3 Inches of Clean Coco Chip Mulch: Keep soil temperatures low and lock in moisture by padding vegetable beds deeply.Water Early (5:00 AM – 8:00 AM): Give roots a deep soak before the high-desert heat drives rapid evaporation.Avoid Midday Overhead Splashing: Water droplets on leaves during peak hours can cause irreversible sun flare damage.
To maintain continuous summer color, feed your annuals nutrients that focus on root development and bloom abundance rather than leafy green expansion.
Water-Soluble Bloom Boosters. Apply every 7 to 14 days to provide immediate phosphorus delivery to active buds.
