The Ducati 1199 Superleggera and Desmosedici RR represent a thrilling clash between surgical modern engineering and raw, unadulterated racing history, defined by mind-boggling attention to detail and jaw-dropping price tags.

While the 1199 Superleggera is an invitation-only, titanium-and-carbon masterpiece that originally cost $65,000 and shaved off so much weight it became lighter than most entry-level 250cc beginner bikes, the Desmosedici RR was a literal MotoGP bike for the street that debuted with an astronomical $72,500 sticker price in 2007.

The Superleggera uses an ultra-exotic magnesium monocoque frame and F1-derived two-ring racing pistons to help its violently torquey L-twin engine bend physics; maintaining a current auction value of roughly $42,000 to $55,000.

Meanwhile, the Desmosedici RR screams an uncompromised, gear-driven V4 exhaust note all the way to 13,800 rpm through a ceramic carbon fiber tail pipe modeled after Formula 1 cars, lacking a single electronic safety net.

Because it was limited to just 1,500 units, pristine examples of the "Desmo" now routinely command anywhere from $45,000 to well over $100,000 (£73,000–£100,000+) at high-end collector auctions like Bring a Trailer.

It is a legendary choice between the highest power-to-weight ratio of any production superbike in history or a lawless, analog Grand Prix weapon.
