Did you know that America's "Mother Road," historic Route 66, turns 100 this year?? 🥳

One of the many ways that New Mexico is celebrating is by setting up art installations all over Albuquerque called "Route 66 Remixed," including this sculpture by Rob Vanderslice that Carter and I were fortunate enough to see in person two weeks ago!

From Visit Albuquerque:
It's a Route 66-themed sculpture covered in multi-colored glitter paint reminiscent of the low riders the state is known for. The colors are inspired by New Mexico sunsets. It was created by Rob Vanderslice, artist and owner of the Vanderslice Kustom Shop. See this work of art today near Central Ave. and Unser Blvd.

Speaking from personal experience: social media can be a drain to one's mental health. 😮‍💨 Which is why today I'm sharing this HerShelves Elves doomscrolling pit stop, to inform you that you deserve a break!

On the 15th, Elder Price, Elder Cunningham, and I experienced ✨️SOMETHING INCREDIBLE✨️ when we got to see The Book of Mormon at Popejoy Hall in Albuquerque! 🤍

We at HerShelves Elves have loved the musical for nearly 10 years now, and know the original Broadway cast's album inside and out. That being said...

The North American tour? Ex. cep. tional. At one point my Playbill slid off my lap because I was shaking so hard with laughter, and the TALENT, my goodness!!! If the North American tour of The Book of Mormon is performing in a city near you, stop what you're doing this instant and purchase tickets! You won't regret it, and you *will* regret missing out on this unbelievable production. 🙏

If you guessed David Rose from Schitt's Creek, then you are ✨️Simply The Best!!✨️

As I lamented in my previous post, this character elf was my white whale. 😮‍💨 Little David Rose was very particular about how he wanted to look, making sure I knew -exactly- how long to make his pant legs, -exactly- how to thread his shoelaces, and -exactly- how to trim his hair. Even when he was completely finished (and I was left flat on the ground with KO over my eyelids), David knew -just- how he wanted to be photographed; fighting me every step of the way, and positively INSISTING on certain poses. Which, honestly...isn't that the most David Rose thing ever? 😆

Besides this handsome, high maintenance little creation having quite the personality, he is also special because I was working on him when we heard of the great Catherine O'Hara's passing. Together we watched Beetlejuice in her memory, as I calculated the exact length and style of little David Rose's sleeves. 🤍

Bringing David to life was, oh boy, quite the process physically and emotionally. ("Ouch, David. OUCH, David!") Looking at him now though, all coiffed, confident, and prepared to make television history, I must say that I am unbelievably proud of this mini masterpiece.

One might say that he is...✨️Simply The Best✨️

..but the strength of an elf-maker's heart was certainly tested as I precariously balanced her on the railing! 😂😨 Thank goodness for Grandfather HerShelves Elves who offered to stand below Gaga with arms wide open, just in case she decided to skip the escalator and swan dive down to the first floor!

While in El Paso last holiday season, Telly and I stumbled across a delightful little treasure called the Chamizal National Memorial! By the time we discovered it their museum was unfortunately already closed for the evening, but the park's winding paths took us on a lovely stroll through the grounds, and led us to the nexus of the United States and Mexico! 😱

Standing on a hill at Chamizal Memorial Park, Telly and I could see El Paso to our left and Ciudad Juárez to our right, so for a surreal moment, it felt like we were in neither city but a third place all in its own. ✨️

With the "Bienvenidos A/Welcome To Mexico" sign in our sights we, of course, had to take a photo, and add this magical night to our map of HerShelves Elves! 12 states and one neighboring country down, countless amounts of adventures to go!! 🥰

February is, no doubt, a month all about love. 💕 Relationship love, familial love, friendship love, and for us, love for our postal workers! 📬

The USPS has been the beating heart of HerShelves Elves ever since I mailed out my first batch of elves in 2014. Each elf and magical beast that is stuffed in a mailbox or plopped on a doorstep arrives safely home thanks to them. 💌

This USPS-blue miniature unicorn has been brought to life for my favorite postal worker, Esther, as a thank you for assisting me in shipping out orders...gosh, ever since HerShelves Elves relocated to New Mexico! If you have adopted a creation from me between the end of 2018 and now, there's an 80% chance that I handed him/her/them off to Esther. 🩷 This miniature unicorn has been made in a blue to resemble the blue in the USPS logo, with a parcel brown flower tucked in her forelock to match her mailbag, and a "sealed" envelope accessory to represent my love and appreciation.

There are few things scarier than letting go of one of your creations--a piece of your soul--and entrusting someone else to safely get it where it's supposed to go. But for nearly 12 years and 900+ creations I've worked with the USPS, and I'll work with them for 12 years and 900+ creations more. 📬🩷

With Valentine's Day just around the corner and spring fast approaching, Nigel and I figured it was time to share our last holiday post of the season! 🎄❄️ Our winter here in northern New Mexico was not quite as cold, wet, or white as it's been in the past, so can you blame an elf-maker for wanting to hold on to the holly jolly spirit for *just* a bit longer? 🎁

A little owl told us that February is national "Love Your Library" month, and they didn't need to tell us twice! 😍📚

Did you know that the "shelves" in HerShelves Elves was taken from the word "bookshelves"? It's safe to say that I'm a huge fan of books and reading, and, naturally, the library! "Love Your Library Month" or "National Library Lovers' Month" is a time set aside in the year to celebrate and appreciate your local library, librarians as a whole, and the vital roles they play in society.

Have you checked out a book lately? Renewed your library card? Patronized their Friends of the Library shop? LJ and Souxsie have, at both the Mesa Public Library in Los Alamos and the Santa Fe Public Library branch on Washington! 💕📖💕

On the 130th world premiere anniversary of the opera La Bohème, Erik, Christine, and I are ecstatic to share that we had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of seeing it LIVE at the Santa Fe Opera last summer! 🎭

La Bohème was Great-Grandmother and Grandmother HerShelves Elves' favorite opera, and is *my* favorite opera to this day. To have seen this timeless and tragic love story at such a legendary opera house, with such an unbelievable cast, in such a beautiful location was an otherworldly experience. Erik, Christine, and I thank the , for presenting us with the best night possible! ✨️
