Thanks to my friend Derek Kevra of Fox 2 Detroit for featuring me and my Santa Monica Shop, 66-to-Cali, in this great piece about about the classic car caravan that left my “End of the Trail” sign (on January 2) headed for the 2026 Detroit International Auto Show! And thanks to Auto Show Director Sam Klemet for honoring 100 years of Route 66, but doing it from Detroit! As I’ve always said, you can’t have the roadtrip culture of Route 66 without the car culture of the Motor City! Thanks Derek for having me on Fox 2 Detroit!…This officially becomes my first ever 10°/40mph “Blizzard” interview! 😂😂😂

It’s hard to believe, but it was 15 years ago today that we dedicated the Santa Monica 66 End of the Trail™ sign on world famous Santa Monica Pier.

The dedication was timed to celebrate the road’s 83rd anniversary in 2009, and today we celebrate the 98th birthday of Route 66, which was extended to Santa Monica from Los Angeles in 1935. Back then there were no street signs marking historic 66 in Santa Monica, and we didn’t have a permanent location. We were still in our original cart that can be seen behind founder Dan Rice’s shoulder along with the original signs, which we still proudly display in our windows (while our cart, the first business ever dedicated to 66 in Santa Monica resides in the California Route 66 Museum).

Since this dedication we’ve spoken with many thousands of road trip fans, both prospective Route 66 travelers and those arriving at journey’s end, about the history and current state of the Mother Road. We’ve become part of a community of “roadies” and businesses new and old who not only commemorate what Route 66 was in its heyday, but as it approaches its 100th anniversary in 2026 dedicate our efforts to making sure the original road trip thrives for new generations of travelers.

What started as a Happy Halloween ended as anything but. Today as I was getting ready to take my boys out for Halloween, I got a call more horrifying than any holiday could ever be. For the past 30 years, one of my best friends in life has been Aaron Segal. In fact, he has evolved into something of a brother to me through the years. He has been there for me through my divorce, the death of my Mother, and he has championed me as I rebuilt my life, built my store “66-to-Cali,” on the Santa Monica Pier into a globally famous destination, and he shared a desire to take his show on the road and start entertaining people out at my store next summer. He would have killed it out there and won over even more hearts worldwide. Today, I was sad to learn and to tell his family that he passed away unexpectedly. Out of respect for them, I won’t go into details, but he would want all of you who are his Paramount Pictures Family to know just how loved and special you all are to him. Especially those who kept in touch with him after his accident these past few years. We were still laughing two days ago, and he was trying to stay upbeat about recovering more function in his leg and eventually returning to the lot and to the Water Tower Cafe. Sadly, it is not to be, but I am in hopes that someone will reach out to me with news that a memorial can be secured and held on the lot at some point for him, so that I can pass that info onto his family. As you all know, it is the way he would want it. No one loved Paramount Pictures, its history, or the whole world of Hollywood and entertainment more than he did. The picture is one of my favorite of him and my boys, and they are devastated too. It just figures that as a man with a heart as big as he was, “The Mayor of Paramount” was loved by young and old alike. My boys were no exception. They adored him too. I think we who knew him can all agree, there will never be another Aaron Segal, the funniest, most overlooked talent hidden in plain sight that Hollywood has ever known. 😢🙏🏻💔

Wishing a very happy 97th birthday today to our friend and mentor Angel Delgadillo! In 1987 Angel launched the effort to revive Route 66 through the founding of the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona and posting of signs declaring 66 a Historic highway. Many Route 66 businesses including ours exist in large part due his work to keep the road alive, and we strive to follow his example by bringing the road to the broader public through our shop on Santa Monica Pier and the Santa Monica 66 End of the Trail™ sign we created in 2009. Whenever you’re in Seligman be sure to stop in for a photo and chat with Angel and his family. If you’re lucky you may catch two of him!
