Don’t Wait for October: Halloween Horror Is Already on the Table

Halloween in the Adirondacks sneaks up the same way a cold front does. One week you’re still in summer stock, the next the maples have turned and someone is asking whether we have anything actually scary.

We do.

This year’s Halloween recommendations is built around four titles that hit different kinds of dread: campground rules you should never break, Appalachian folk who are not here to grant wishes, a Colorado highway that remembers you, and a private island that wants a body in the water. Some are brand-new. Some just came out in time to haunt September and October. All of them belong in a stack by the door.

Maggie O’Farrell’s Land is the one we’re pushing across the counter. If Hamnet stayed with you, this will too — Ireland after the Great Hunger, a mapmaker who refuses the official story, and a family trying to make a life on land that still remembers everything. Gorgeous, heavy, and quietly devastating in the best O’Farrell way. We especially love the historical side: the famine’s long shadow, the renaming of places, the sense that nothing on that peninsula ever really goes away.
