So happy it's Thursday. For today's featured find, we have two necklaces from the creative mind of Margo. The first combines topaz microbeads with three beads of meteorite, the second is black spinel microbeads with a single bead of meteorite.

These special beads are from the Aletai meteorite which was discovered in the Xinjiang Region of China. An iron/nickel meteorite which displays Widmanstätten patterns, it is thought to be 4.5 billion years old.

Today's featured find, sodalite-syenite a.k.a. Emberlite which shares its mineral composition with Yooperlite (Upper Peninsula of Michigan). The silicates in this material are UV reactive, as you see in the images below. Our spheres are roughly the size of billiard balls and are from China.

Blue baryte, also spelled barite, is a blue variety of the mineral barium sulfate. Its crystals often form flat blades, overlapping plates, or flowerlike clusters, with a glassy to pearly sheen. Their delicate appearance hides an unexpected characteristic: baryte is unusually heavy for a nonmetallic mineral, with a density approximately 4.5 times that of water.
Baryte comes from the Greek word barys which means heavy. Despite it's weight it is very soft not making it a stone used in jewelry but rather as a display peice.
With its blue coloring, sculptural crystal formations, and surprising heft, blue baryte offers a memorable combination of beauty and geology. The specimen shown is available in our showroom measuring 12 x 14 x 8.

Many who visit us have seen our extensive selection of ancient marine fossils. If you're like me, you have probably asked yourself, "I wonder what's so special about Morocco?"

Morocco has a fortunate combination: ancient seas full of life, rocks that preserved their remains, and enormous areas where those rocks are exposed today. That makes it both rich in fossils and an excellent place to find them.

The seabed became a fossil archive. Mud and lime sediment accumulated around animal remains, eventually becoming shale and limestone. Some Moroccan limestone beds contain remarkable concentrations of shelled sea creatures.

The rock layers remain unusually readable. Parts of the Anti-Atlas Mountains experienced relatively limited folding and faulting, leaving long, recognizable sequences of fossil-bearing beds.

The newest creation from the desk of Margo. A new twist, literally. Black spinel with chrome diopside, often referred to as Russian emerald. While it can be found in many countries, the stone from Russia has a deep emerald green color. This necklace is sized 17.5 inches and is finished with Sterling silver.
