Chatelaine purses originally were small affairs designed to hang with other tools and accessories from a waist-affixed chatelaine. During the Victorian era, however, they became larger and were worn as a stand-alone accessory. The metal frames were often elaborate and by the late 19th century were being sold by themselves so that ladies could design their own bags. We currently have a lovely example for sale from the late Victorian or Edwardian era featuring a charming woodland scene with butterflies, an owl, and a mouse. The bag is probably mink and is in remarkably good condition. You can find it at madcatemporium.etsy.com
