It’s simple: they understand that spectrum matters.
Every part of the light spectrum can play a different role in plant development. For too long, LED lighting has been engineered around metrics like high efficacy, often at the expense of a balanced spectrum and plant biology.
And honestly, we think that’s given LEDs a bad name.
So YES — if your experience with LEDs hasn’t been great, it may not be that LEDs are the problem.
The spectrum might be.
Here’s the simple way to think about it:
Plants evolved under sunlight, developing sophisticated systems to capture, respond to, and use different wavelengths of light. When we dramatically alter that spectrum, we shouldn’t be surprised when plant responses change too.
Plants have multiple light-sensing systems and photoreceptors. Red and far-red light are sensed primarily through phytochromes, while blue/UV-A wavelengths interact with cryptochromes, phototropins and other photoreceptors. (Nature)
And green light? It isn’t useless light.
Research shows green wavelengths can pe*****te deeper into leaves and canopies, contributing to photosynthesis deeper in the plant. As Smith et al. put it:
“Green light makes a unique contribution to photosynthesis on both a leaf and canopy level.” (OUP Academic)
Another review puts it simply:
“Plants use green wavelengths to assimilate CO₂, to promote higher biomass and yield…” (OUP Academic)
That’s why we don’t believe in building a light around one efficiency number or a couple of big peaks.
PPFD matters. But spectrum matters too.
The goal should be to deliver the wavelengths plants are actually equipped to sense, absorb and respond to — across the PAR spectrum — in a balanced way.
