Why do some of the top breeders and growers choose Mammoth?

It’s simple: they understand that spectrum matters.

Every part of the light spectrum can play a different role in plant development. For too long, LED lighting has been engineered around metrics like high efficacy, often at the expense of a balanced spectrum and plant biology.

And honestly, we think that’s given LEDs a bad name.

So YES — if your experience with LEDs hasn’t been great, it may not be that LEDs are the problem.

The spectrum might be.

Here’s the simple way to think about it:

Plants evolved under sunlight, developing sophisticated systems to capture, respond to, and use different wavelengths of light. When we dramatically alter that spectrum, we shouldn’t be surprised when plant responses change too.

Plants have multiple light-sensing systems and photoreceptors. Red and far-red light are sensed primarily through phytochromes, while blue/UV-A wavelengths interact with cryptochromes, phototropins and other photoreceptors. (Nature)

And green light? It isn’t useless light.

Research shows green wavelengths can pe*****te deeper into leaves and canopies, contributing to photosynthesis deeper in the plant. As Smith et al. put it:

“Green light makes a unique contribution to photosynthesis on both a leaf and canopy level.” (OUP Academic)

Another review puts it simply:

“Plants use green wavelengths to assimilate CO₂, to promote higher biomass and yield…” (OUP Academic)

That’s why we don’t believe in building a light around one efficiency number or a couple of big peaks.

PPFD matters. But spectrum matters too.

The goal should be to deliver the wavelengths plants are actually equipped to sense, absorb and respond to — across the PAR spectrum — in a balanced way.

That’s the thinking behind Mammoth.

Don’t put your grow or facility at a disadvantage. Stop buying different LEDs with basically the same spectrum. Different brand, different efficacy number — same light to the plant.

Plants care about PPFD + spectrum.

Plants have pigment absorption peaks and photoreceptors across the PAR spectrum. You need to hit them all to maximize plant expression. 🌱☀️

That means Green Spec. Dual Red Terp Boost. Triple Blue. Not another heavy-red/blue LED chasing an efficacy number.

A June 18, 2024 cannabis study found that splitting red light between 640 + 660nm increased inflorescence weight and light-use efficiency, and at higher PPFD increased total terpene concentration.

The researchers wrote:

“Dividing the light energy in the red waveband over both 640 and 660 nm equally shows potential in enhancing photosynthesis and plant dry matter production.”

That’s why we build around nature + the science.

Don’t chase the number on the spec sheet.

Without a doubt, the future is full, balanced spectrum that looks like nature.

A lot of today’s “full spectrum” LEDs still aren’t truly full spectrum if there’s a big green + teal gap. That’s the missing link in 99% of LEDs today.

Got Green Spec + Far Red?

Green and far-red pe*****te deeper into the leaf and canopy than the wavelengths most LEDs are built around.

“Yield is primarily driven by PPFD.”

Absolutely. But spectrum matters too.

A good spectrum helps you use higher PPFD without stressing the plant like you can with an unbalanced LED spectrum.

More usable PPFD = more photons reaching more of the plant = more yield.

It’s not just about blasting the tops.

Get the spectrum right, then push the PPFD.

That’s where things get interesting. 👀

Your undercanopy wants a natural spectrum too. 🌱☀️

Stop buying heavy-red undercanopy lights.🙇🙇

Red and blue are absorbed heavily near the top of the leaf, while green pe*****tes deeper into leaves and the canopy. As the University of Tokyo puts it: “green light is actually just as efficient at driving photosynthesis as red light.”

And cannabis research backs this up.

Hawley et al. (2018) found that both Red/Blue and RGB subcanopy lighting increased yield and THC vs. the control — but RGB also increased several terpene concentrations. (Horticultural Science Journals)

The meta-analysis of that work said: “red, green and blue SCL had the greatest impact on metabolite upregulation.” (Frontiers)

Your undercanopy is already receiving a filtered, red-shifted spectrum as light moves through the canopy.

So why add another heavy-red light underneath?

Give the lower canopy a balanced spectrum.

End-of-Day Far Red. 🌅

Does it actually put the plant to sleep faster?

Does it make the plant finish flowering faster?

And could that big, abrupt shift toward far-red at lights-out increase stress or herm rates? 🤔

If you’ve followed Mammoth long enough, you know we’ve never fully bought into EOD far-red as a proven way to accelerate flowering or finishing

Not because we don’t support experimentation. We absolutely do…and we encourage the testing. We are science based first

But we want to see the objective testing.

This new 2026 study compared continuous far-red throughout the 12-hour light period with 1 hour of far-red at the end of the day.

And when it came to flowering?

“No significant differences were detected in the timing of floral initiation.”

That’s important.

If EOD FR is supposed to be a shortcut to faster flowering, you’d want to see it outperform continuous FR.

And when it comes to actually finishing the flower faster, the evidence is still inconclusive. See the slides and videos.

Now, there IS some interesting research on EOD FR and cannabinoids.

A 2025 study tested Northern Lights with 2 hours of far-red after lights-out. The researchers found:

“The THC concentrations were elevated in both high THC varieties by the different FR treatments.”

In Northern Lights, the 2-hour EOD treatment increased total cannabinoid yield by nearly 70% vs. the 12-hour control.

Interesting. 👀

But that doesn’t prove EOD FR makes the plant flower or finish faster. Flower biomass wasn’t significantly different, and the response varied by genotype.

There’s also something else we hear from growers…

Anecdotal reports of increased herms with aggressive EOD FR.

We’re NOT saying the science proves EOD FR causes herms — it doesn’t.

But instead of the relatively small shift in R:FR at natural sunset, you’re hitting the plant with a concentrated blast of far-red.

Could that matter? Becareful.

Far-red absolutely has a role in plant photobiology. We’re not anti-FR.

We’re anti-“this definitely makes your plants finish faster” when the controlled research hasn’t demonstrated it.

Experiment. Test. Measure.

Spectrum matters. And so does the science. 🔬
