It is Purple Heart day today. A day when we honor the men and women that have given their all for our country and were wounded or killed in combat.

Most are not aware of the history of this award. It actually goes back to George Washington in 1782, with the Badge of Merit. Washington intended the honor to be presented to soldiers for "any singularly meritorious action." In 1932 in honor of Washington's 200th birthday and because of the efforts of General Douglas MacArthur, the U.S. War Department created the Order of the Purple Heart for commendable actions. In 1944 the award was changed to only include those being injured or killed in combat.Since that time, close to 2 million have been earned this honor for their bravery in combat.

While it would be a great thing to happen, unfortunately our country will never have a time when we won't need our military to protect our country and its citizens from the evil in the world. We salute those that put on the uniform and stand a post to protect our Freedoms.

Today is American Family day.

When was the last time you brought the family to the range with you? Maybe you are the type that always makes range day a family event and of course we applaud you for that. Besides the obvious benefits of getting together and enjoying some time doing fun things, it promotes fi****ms safety and the used of fi****ms in a positive way.

But maybe it has been a while. School, baseball practice, soccer matches, cheerleading drills and summer festivities all create a demand on parents time. We get that. Most of us at R&R Tactical are parents as well. Family life is full of demands.

We do see families in our weekly Hunter Safety courses. Mom, dad, uncle or grandpa is often here with a new young hunter. But how about for other shooting sports events? Teaching or working with your son or daughter while they learn gun safety, basic marksmanship and skills that will stay with them for life is a great family activity!

Your son or daughter (or both or more) are welcome on our range as young as 8 years old (with parental supervision of course.) And that is a perfect age to start them out, especially with a youth sized 22 rifle.

So what do you say? Will we see you here either today, this week or soon with your family? We sure hope so!

Are you ready for the next level of training? Why not take our intermediate level handgun class. Sure, you know the basics. You are getting decent groupings,not great but fair, and your speed to acquire could use a little help. This would be the class for you.

Students should be familiar with and have experience with the handgun you will be working with. We will go over the next level of sighting, drawing and engaging your target. This type of training will be helpful for both competition as well as concealed carry.

The class will be on August 17th and 6PM to 8PM. Bring 150 rounds of ammo (you may not shoot it all) and be ready to be run thru the paces. Eye and ear protection are available to rent if you don't have your own. The class runs 125.00 and call to reserve your spot - problems with the reservations on the website right now.

The next concealed carry class at R&R Tactical will be held on August 8th, starting at 3 PM. Everything but you will be provided, including your fingerprint card, photograph and application form.

So why get a concealed carry permit? Yes, Utah is a Constitutional carry state, but there are still many advantages to having your CFP which we will go over. The class is open to everyone 18 and over. Yes in Utah you can get a CFP at 18, called a provisional permit, which will be valid until you are 21 and is recognized in a number of other states.

We will go over the laws, your rights and responsibilities, situational awareness and how to avoid a confrontation as well as selection of a carry arm and holster.

Our instructor has been teaching these classes for over 25 years in multiple states and brings a wide variety of experiences with him, both of his own and of those that have carried and were called upon to defend themselves and the aftermath of it all. The class is open to all people who are 18 or will be 18 in a few months, resident of Utah or of any other state.

We are currently having difficulties with the reservation system on our website, so just give us a call to reserve your place in the class. We would ask that you show up 15-30 minutes early to do the fingerprinting and photographs. Drinks and munchies are fine.

It is National Talk in an Elevator day here in the US. I didn't even know that was a thing but elevators are used for all sorts of things. We have all seen TV shows and movies where scenes are shot in an elevator. Some shows have even feature the elevator as more of an office. Some strange things have happened in an elevator (such as the big dent created in the stainless steel wall of the elevator at the old Las Vegas metro police HQ that very closely resembles what a Wi******er .45ACP silvertip impact fired at very close range would look like. That must have been LOUD.)

Now, MAYBE your idea of an ideal target range is the inside of an elevator. The detective involved never said much about that. But I think a much better idea of a range is the fantastic R&R Tactical range. Several big advantages - your target won't be inches away, we have sound deadening panels up to help eliminate the ringing that would result from shooting inside a metal box and you can actually work on your shooting skills in a much safer environment. Not to mention reducing the ribbing from your coworkers that went on for years.

If you want to talk in the range, that certainly can be done, so feel free to bring someone along to talk with. We have some of the best conversations going on in our range!

And yes, the elevator shooting really did take place. The 80's were a fun time!

The weekend is coming up and you want to have a date night with your partner.

A movie? Not a lot to pick from. And the popcorn is pretty greasy.

Dinner? You might find something really good, you might not, but you are going to eat anyway so its not as special.

Drive someplace? Hey have you seen the price of gas - not to mention the temperature.

So you got a handgun for personal protection, but your 'training' consists of watching a few movies.....

Not where you want to be if the worst day of your life happens.

I can tell you that holding a gun sideways may look 'cool' but it is not what you want to be doing if you need to use it.

Come down to R&R and take a class. One on one coaching. Or even just ask for some pointers at the counter. Do something. We offer classes on handgun use from beginner on up, as well as concealed carry classes.

Have you ever even shot at a target?

It is amazing the number of people that just buy a gun and never learn how to use it. And we want to help.

Learn the weaver, isosceles and modified weaver stances. Learn what a proper sight picture is. Learn instinct shooting. Learn how to draw up and push away from your body to control recoil. Have you ever practiced weak hand shooting? It may come in handy some day. Yes, there is a lot you should learn. And we can help. And our range is open and ready for you.

It may be hard to imagine the frosty morning of a fall hunt while you are baking in the summer sun, but that is exactly the right time to do it! If you were born after Dec. 31, 1965 and have not already done so, you will need to take an approved hunter safety course BEFORE you can put in for tag draws or to get a big game license. The best way to do it is to complete the online portion so that you can sign up for an instructor led field day. And we do the field day at R&R! The problem is that so many people wait until the last minute to do so. Classes will become impossible to find very shortly, so the smart thing to do is do it now and get it behind you! We get people driving long distances from all over the state to classes, because they are all booked up ahead of time.
Go to https://dwrapps.utah.gov/dwrcourses/he/internet and find the classes we have listed at R&R. We do them almost every Saturday morning, with an occasional class on other days or times. These classes, even in the slower days of summer, will be filled long before the class date. You will need to complete the online portion BEFORE you can sign up for the class. And if you wait a couple of months - impossible to get into. That's why we have students from Moab, Cedar City, Logan, Vernal and all other points in the state.

If you are a fan of fi****ms, today marks a landmark - the birthdate of TWO of the greatest fi****ms minds in history! Samuel C**t was born on July 19, 1814 and Gaston G***k was born on July 19, 1929

Sam C**t created an innovation we take for granted today, the mass production of fi****ms, allowing for parts to be interchangeable and production to be increased, and brought revolvers to the forefront where single shots were the rule of the day. Gaston G***k, who knew nothing about fi****ms manufacturing, took his industrial engineering expertise and designed a new firearm using materials and designs that were very innovative and revolutionary.

Now we could easily make this a post about the 1911 vs. G***k, but we would rather focus on the minds that saw things that weren't and moved forward to create companies to make it happen and evolve. C**t began mass production and went on the 'make men equal' by delivering products that gave people a fighting chance against an adversary. All of the many revolvers, rifles and shotguns from the mid 1800's, thru perfecting pistols for greater fire power and on to standards today like the 2011 and AR15/M16/M4 rifle families. G***k used non standard materials and designs to build some of the most rugged and dependable handguns ever, used today by most police departments and militaries around the world as well as civilians. So many other manufacturers rely on these developments to both create or copy and make their own fi****ms.

Minds like Sam and Gaston are few. We salute you both and thank you for your innovations!
