I have a story to share:
These are "NICU Hearts," which this Project Linus chapter gives to our local children's hospital. Usually, they are shared with the Neonatal ICU parents, who wear them in their clothes and leave them with their infants' isolettes overnight. When I made a delivery of blankets to Memorial Health today, their coordinator told me that recently they had a woman brought into Intensive Care, accompanied with her three young children. Tragically, the children had to sit and wait as their mother passed away. The hospital staff member went to the Linus donations and gave the children three matching fabric hearts. This gave them something soft and colorful to hold as they said goodbye. They were able to take the hearts home with them when they left the hospital as a tangible reminder of their family's love for one another.
When the hospital staff member shared this story with me, she framed it as an apology that the hearts weren't given to an infant in the NICU, but I reassured her that all that matters is that Project Linus donations bring comfort and love to children who need it. I'm so grateful to be able to be a part of an organization that is able to share such beautiful creations with kids in our community.
