ARE YOU HEARING BOOMS OR SUDDEN RUMBLES IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD?
I’ve heard from several folks asking me: What’s up?
One in Lebanon, TN messaged me:
“Nick,
We’ve had several large booms that shake the house.
We thought a tree had fallen on our house with one of them.
And it isn’t the local plant doing one of their usual blasts.
What is it?”
They guessed a cryoseism.
I did some checking and agree.
They can happen in Tennessee.
What’s a cryoseism?
It is commonly known as a frost quake or ice quake — a non-tectonic seismic event caused by the sudden, rapid freezing of water-saturated soil or rock.
Uh, that just happened.
As the water turns to ice, it expands, building pressure until the ground fractures, producing loud booming sounds, bangs, and slight tremors.
Typically harmless, but perhaps a bit unsettling.
Anyone else hear or feel a cryoseism?
I THINK FROST QUAKES ARE COOL.
