Reflection: The teaching of Jesus Christ is one of total compassion and forgiveness and He desires that we might have abundant life (John 10:10).
It should be our delight that He always seeks our healing and our happiness.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your compassion, which is ever present. Touch me where I have been asking for Your wholeness and healing.

August 9, 2026 - Scripture Meditation - The Lord will be passing by. (1 Kings 19:11)
Reflection: Today's readings seem to have a lot in common: great displays of God's power, natural disturbances, reasons to fear. But the most important thing that happens in them is the fact that God makes His presence known. Whether it's in Jesus' walking on the water or in the tiny whisper that Elijah heard, the Lord comes to His children.
Fleeing a threat to his life, the prophet Elijah was so frustrated that he didn't want to continue his mission. So he sat under a tree and asked to die. But the angel of the Lord fed him and guided him to a mountain where "the Lord [would] be passing by" (1 Kings 19:11). God was not in the strong wind, in the earthquake, or in the fire, however. He was in "a tiny whispering sound" (19:12). In today's Gospel, the disciples were in a boat that was being tossed by the wind and the waves when they saw Jesus coming "toward them walking on the sea" (Matthew 14:25). Of course they were terrified!
You can probably relate. There are moments in life when it can feel as if you are being tossed by the "wind" or shaken by an "earthquake" : a serious illness, the loss of a job, a loved one who walks away from the Lord. When unexpected situations happen, you might want to look for "shelter" in "a cave" (1 Kings 19:9). You might be afraid or you might have "little faith" (Matthew 14:31). Because it might feel as if the Lord is absent, as if He doesn't care, or as if you're beyond His help.
But God wants to reassure you. He is passing by! He's inviting you to the "mountain" - a quiet place where you can pray and pour out your heart - to spend time with Him. He wants you to remember that He comes to you, He stretches out His hand, and He holds you and keeps you steady. Then He says: "Take courage... ; do not be afraid" (Matthew 14:27). - The Word Among Us, August 2026
Prayer: "Lord, I know You come to my aid. Help me to trust in You."

August 8, 2026 - Scripture Meditation - It is through many trials that we are to enter the Kingdom of God. - Acts 14:22
Reflection: Our eternal destination is to enter the kingdom of heaven. However, we must undergo many trials and tribulations to reach our goal, where we will have eternal happiness.
Are not all the sufferings that must be faced on the way worth our patient endurance in order to reach that destination - even if they include death?
Prayer: My Savior, strengthen me so that I may follow You. Let the cross of this world be one day my key to heaven.

August 7, 2026 - Scripture Meditation - Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You. (Matthew 14:28)
Reflection: From the moment Peter abandoned his fishing nets, he followed Jesus wherever He went and tried to imitate Him.
Peter even got out of a boat and tried to walk on water! He had to be where Jesus was.
Peter promised at the Last Supper that he would never deny Jesus. But just as he floundered in the water, Peter gave in to fear a few hours after his promise - denying Jesus three times. Jesus again rescued Peter, this time with a single glance (see Luke 22:61). That look made Peter aware of his sin and led him to a realization of his weakness and need for forgiveness. Jesus' love gave Peter the courage to keep trying to follow the Lord.
Peter knew he wasn't perfect. He kept his eyes on Jesus and persisted in taking each next step toward Him. Jesus' love had set his heart ablaze, and that fire continued to burn because Peter didn't give up.
Look into Jesus' eyes, and receive His gentle look of love. Let your heart burn with that love.
Prayer: "Lord, enkindle in me a desire to follow You and remain close to You my whole life."

August 6, 2026 - Scripture Meditation - We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven. (2 Peter 1:18)
Reflection: Did you notice the authority and immediacy of Peter's testimony in today's second reading? We were there. We saw His majesty. We heard the Father's voice.
The New Testament comes to us across two thousand years as personal historical testimony. Jesus, the beloved Son of the Father, walked, talked, ate, and drank with the disciples who accompanied Him. They saw the astounding miracles He performed. They heard His teaching, which rang with authority and moved their hearts. They prayed with Him. Some of them (Peter, James, and John) were even with Him on the Mount of Transfiguration when He manifested His glory and the Father spoke from heaven.
But the power of Peter's declaration doesn't come simply from one man's experience of the glory of the Lord. It comes from the power of the Holy Spirit, both guiding Peter's testimony and enabling us to hear it as God's word. When we read these words, we are hearing the Father Himself speaking to us. As the Second Vatican Council taught, "In the sacred books, the Father Who is in heaven meets His children with great love and speaks with them" (Dei Verbum, 21).
As you read or hear the Gospel for today's feast of the Transfiguration, know that God Himself is speaking to you, as He spoke to Peter, James, and John on the mountain: "This is My beloved Son … ; listen to Him" (Matthew 17:5). He wants you to see the majesty of His Son, Jesus. He wants you to hear His voice.
What might the Spirit want to say to you through these readings? He may want to teach you something new or remind you of something you already know but may have lost sight of. Perhaps, as He did for Peter, He wants to show you His glory in the face of His Son. Or He may want to reassure you that you can hear Him. The same Holy Spirit Who inspired Peter lives in you! You can ask Him to open the eyes and ears of your heart - today, tomorrow, and every day after. - The Word Among Us, August 2026
