Exciting news from the type 1 diabetes diabetes research world we wanted to share with our ENDIA community 💙

Results presented at the 2026 American Diabetes Association conference show all 12 people in a study called the “Eledon trial” are now making their own insulin again — and no longer need to inject it. Every participant also achieved an HbA1c below 6.5%, with an average of 5.4% — that's in the normal range for people without diabetes.

The trial uses a targeted anti-rejection drug called "tegoprubart" alongside donor islet transplants. Because it targets a specific part of the immune system rather than broadly switching it down, it appears to protect transplanted cells without the serious side effects of standard drugs. No kidney damage, no nerve damage, no rejection — and transplanted cells surviving 3 to 5 times better than standard treatment.

A few important things to keep in mind! This is still an early-stage trial with just 12 people involved. Follow-up is still relatively short between 8 and 22 months, and participants still need ongoing medication. Tegoprubart isn't approved in Australia yet for this use, and the shortage of donor islets remains a real barrier to making this widely available.

But this is progress! And it moves us closer to better options for everyone impacted by T1D. We'll keep you updated as the research develops. 🔬
