A tale of two salvias...

One is native, the other is not. We love both!!

Salvia lyrata (native- right)is a small evergreen ground cover that flowers in late spring, forms colonies, and can handle part shade.

Salvia nemorosa (non native - left) is a great plant for dry sun. It flowers for a very long time and comes in an assortment of colors.

🐝Both are pollenator plants that have an exposed lower lip of the flower that provides an excellent landing platform for bees.

🐝When a bee lands, the two stamens are tipped, and the insect is doused with pollen.

Mt. Cuba, is a beautiful botanical garden in Delaware. They evaluate native plants and related cultivars for horticultural and ecological value.

They create garden studies that discuss different cultivar groups of native perennials, how they perform based on features of the plant. The study below is for the species Carex.
