This is super cool…🎶🎶🎶
WOAH…In one fell swoop, under the guidance of the brilliant Giles Martin, my Fav Beatles Album of all time has changed!
This new mix has revealed Revolver to be the masterpiece we always knew it was…but now through the clarity of the original tracks being placed into more contemporary stereo imaging, it reveals itself to be quite possibly a sonic masterpiece surpassing even Sgt Peppers innovations….
Every song now has a completely new facelift where EVERY instrument, sound & nuance can be completely fleshed out into the mix with clarity and depth that was never possible with the sub-bounces that were necessary back in 1966.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!
Highlights:
* the electric version of Got To Get You Into My Life is an unearthed GEM 💎 - like a long lost brother to Paperback Writer - with all the horn parts being played on guitar
* The sludgy version of And Your Bird Can Sing (Second Version - Take 5) is an all time great Lennon performance and Ringo’s sludge groove pre-dates Bonham!
Misc Observations:
* Taxman is such an inspired choice to open the album…incredible for a George song to get that coveted spot…and really a great choice. (And also an inspired idea to have the count-in at the top)
* Interesting that not only did George get the opening track…but also the #4 track position - meaning John or Paul didn’t get a 2nd song before George did - and also a pretty strange choice for a 4th song with its Indian flavor
* Paul’s first two songs on the album (Eleanor & HT&E) are both uncharacteristically subtle and not band oriented
* Yellow Submarine is Ringo’s first real vocal appearance in the Beatles mid-period after having no songs on the US versions of Rubber Soul & Help - Also had no idea Yellow Sub came from John…always assumed Paul wrote it for Ringo…John’s demo is a revelation!
* John may be my new found MVP of Revolver with I’m Only Sleeping, She Said She Said, And Your Bird Can Sing, Dr Robert and Tomorrow Never Knows (and Rain) being (IMHO) the most consistent great rock songs on the album
* That being said about John, I never realized most of Paul’s contributions were a bit of the shmaltzy/Grandma Paul side: Eleanor Rigby, HT&E, Good Day Sunshine & For No One
* That being said about Paul, he knocks it outta the park with the often forgotten GTGYIML - which has a PHENOMENAL alternate version on the session outtakes disc
* Never noticed the overdubbed Hi Hat track on And Your Bird Can Sing
* Interesting hearing the tracking session for She Said She Said…(with George on Bass?? I still see this being contested)…a full song completed in one late night session..and done completely withOUT Paul who walked out of the session after a fight…(a rare Beatles track with no Paul involvement)
* Had NO IDEA about the fast speed version of Rain…can’t believe Ringo tracked it at that tempo! I never knew it was tracked that fast and then slowed down….wow, even all these years later, I can’t believe there’s still stuff I can learn about the Fab 4 🤯
