Today’s featured pottery shop is The Triangle Studio, opened in 2019 by potters Kate Waltman and Erin Younge! It is located here in Seagrove in a historic brick building that was built in the early 1900's.

The studio gallery features pottery from both Kate an Erin, and their occasional guests. They make a wide variety of works including dinnerware, storage vessels, vases, sculptures and large pots, each bringing their own unique style and vision to their creations! Along with regular gallery hours, they host several events throughout the year that feature special themed pieces!

Today, we’re thrilled to highlight Matthew Kelly Pottery, an incredible voice in our vibrant community of over 50 local pottery studios!

Matthew’s journey began as a high school freshman, taking his first turning job at age 16 with legendary Seagrove shops Holly Hill and JB Cole.
After nearly two decades mastering his craft as a journeyman potter, he launched his own studio in 2013, combining deep-rooted North Carolina traditions with modern innovation.

Using local clays and raw glaze materials, Matthew crafts elegant functional and decorative art. His signature style features meticulous slip work fired through electric, gas, and atmospheric wood-fired kilns.

Luck's Ware is today’s featured pottery shop!

Sid Luck, a fifth generation potter, is still going strong with North Carolina traditions and has been awarded "NC Icon" by Our State Magazine in 2024. This pottery tradition is observed in the shape of many old time functional stoneware pieces such as candle holders, churns, jugs, pitchers, and teapots.

Sid digs local clay to use in some of his pottery. One of the wheels he still uses for turning was originally in his father's shop. A wood fired groundhog kiln, built in 2003, is used to produce salt-glazed pottery similar to that produced many years ago by Luck ancestors.
Bricks from the kilns of Sid's father and grandfather were used in the construction.

He served in the US Marine Corps, and taught chemistry in public school. He loves giving back to the community and sharing his craft, teaching youngsters at the North Carolina Pottery Center in the TAPS program.
He has also been given two separate and prestigious honors North Carolina Living Treasure Award (1994) and the North Carolina Heritage Award (2014).

One of the founding families of Seagrove Pottery are the Cravens, and our featured potter today, Donna Craven is a 7th Generation potter!
She creates an array of small to large pots woodfired and salted to create drippy, atmospheric surfaces that highlights her designs on these traditional forms.
Donna began as a journeyman potter in Seagrove in 1996, and spent years working day & night with various artists and studios in the Seagrove community. She built her first groundhog kiln in 2001 and held her first kiln opening later that year.
Her pots are wood-fired and salt-glazed, giving the pots a rich surface to reflect the earth-based materials. Donna fires for around sixteen hours to cone 12 (2450 degrees F) with an overnight preheat.

"I’m known for my larger pieces that are thrown and coiled with a one-inch extended coil. My work is grounded in tradition, yet reflects my own influences that produce a combination of strength, simplicity, and gracefulness that is undeniably unique. I frequently employ a taped decoration technique using manganese or a combination of crackle slips and ash glaze to achieve my effects. I’m always searching for the one pot that mirrors my idea of perfection and frequently find that it is the rare, unexpected quality when pulled from the kiln that makes the work so beautiful and satisfying. It’s a lot of hard, humbling work and I’m honored to be part of a tradition that is thousands of years old. I am a 7th generation, direct descendant of Peter Craven from Randolph County."

At the intersection of traditional heritage and contemporary studio pottery, you’ll find the work of David Stuempfle.

Originally from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, David has called Seagrove home for over 20 years, drawing inspiration from extensive travels across Europe and Asia, as well as historic American pottery. His world-renowned work has earned him prestigious honors—including a US/Japan Creative Artists Fellowship—and can be found in collections at the Mint Museum of Art and the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park Museum in Japan.

Visit his home studio in the Westmoore area of Seagrove for an outdoor kiln opening or schedule a private visit by appointment.
