This is my favorite way to get a collection.

We had a lady come in the other day with these two old boxes full of coins. One was an old wooden box and the other was this beefy antique metal lockbox.

Opening up old boxes like these and finding silver inside is just so cool. There were over 70 silver dollars, quite a bit of pre-65 90%, and even a Carson City dollar mixed in.

I was not expecting to find this error!

Most U.S. coins are struck with what’s called “coin alignment,” meaning when you flip the coin vertically, the other side appears upright. But this 2-cent piece has a 180° rotated die error — when you flip it normally, the reverse is completely upside down.

Finding a U.S. coin with a perfect 180° rotation like this is pretty cool, especially mixed into a pile of old coins.

A lady stopped into the shop last week and sold us a couple coins. She mentioned she had some more stuff at home, so we scheduled a mobile appointment to go take a look.

It was a smaller collection with a nice mix of things — some sterling silver medals, 90% silver, silver certificates, and a handful of different coin sets.

We ended up buying the collection and brought everything back to the shop to start sorting through.
