V/H/S/99 (2022 directed by Multiple Directors from the horror genre)
Y2K meets Horror Anthologies, another cool entry in this franchise, this undoubtedly is one of the weaker entries but it gave us “Ozzy’s Dungeon” so it’s forgiven. Going to rate each individual short and then average it out for the full ranking.
“Shredding” - 2/5
I can admit that if I liked punk rock that I’d actually dig this more, but that era of music was never my thing, I do however love the gore in this one (especially the end scene with the band put back together)
“Suicide Bid” - 2.5/5
Very similar to the Funeral Home one in ‘94, and the idea of being buried alive as a form of hazing and then being left there is terrifying. Points away because the camera movements don’t make sense in the context of what is happening in the short, like when Giltine is scaring you why would be moving the camera back and forth to see her and your own reactions?
“Ozzy’s Dungeon” - 4/5
Flying Lotus made a Nickelodeon-esque Game Show and Flying Lotus’d all over it, it’s amazing. This short is what saves the film for me, this and Mabel of course.
“The Gawkers” - 2/5
Too American Pie for me, but like worse if that’s even possible lol I much preferred the stop motion interludes to the actual short starting when the older brother takes the camera back.
“To Hell and Back” - 3/5
Love the big scope of this short, and the dark comedy that was added as well, the only thing that doesn’t work for me is that it seems like it’s from now instead of the year 1999. Other wise it’s good, Mabel kicks ass as a weird character.
Initial Thoughts: Aesthetically it’s very similar to ‘94, but it is a step down in content I’d say but not that much. It’s the golden V/H/S rule, not every segment can be amazing, there will always be duds.
