This round is about matte white, but not a true white.
I’m interested in the space between eggshell, alabaster, bone, and warm stone. A white that still has depth. A white that feels mineral, not flat.
I tested my True Matte base with three different materials: titanium dioxide, tin oxide, and rutile.
Same base glaze, same firing, but very different results.
Titanium dioxide is still my favorite here, which is the original recipe from Round 2 for those who have been following. It gives the surface a soft, cloudy opacity and the kind of warmth I’m looking for. It doesn’t just make the glaze white. It gives it that slightly mineral, alabaster quality.
Tin oxide gave the cleanest white. It’s beautiful, but it leans cooler and brighter than what I want for this glaze. On some of the smaller test pieces, it even started to read gray.
Rutile moved everything warmer. Since rutile naturally contains titanium, iron, and other trace materials, it brought more creamy earthiness and pushed the glaze into a different category. Almost butter or yellow in certain lights.
The biggest takeaway is how much these “white” materials change the personality of the glaze. They’re not interchangeable. They each affect opacity, warmth, surface, and how the glaze interacts with the clay body underneath.
