If you live in or plan to visit the great Pacific Northwest, be sure to visit our very own storefront, simply called the Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery, in the happenin' Seattle neighborhood of Georgetown. The culmination of a years-long dream, the store opened in October 2006, with a grand opening celebration held on December 2 of that year (and swinging anniversary parties each year thereafte

The store contains everything Fantagraphics has in print (as well as our adult imprint Eros Comix), including exclusive merchandise, plus a selection of the best alternative comics from our fellow publshers and other surprises! It also houses our hallowed Damaged Room, featuring heavily discounted and often out-of-print books unavailable anywhere else. (And vinyl junkies be warned: the Bookstore shares space with Georgetown Records, a Seattle record-collectors' mecca. And it is just a short stroll from some of Seattle's best and most beloved coffee shops, taverns, eateries and art spaces.) The space also has room for art exhibitions, with a new exhibit mounted about once a month. We also host readings, screenings, music and other performances.

The wait is over! We’ll celebrate the release of Roberta Gregory’s anxiously anticipated anthology “BITCHY!” with an art show and book signing this evening at 5 PM. A glowing review in the New York Times concludes, “Gregory seems to take particular pleasure in finding jokes where many of us wouldn't dare to look for them.” Come see for yourself!

Young Roberta Gregory (far right) seated next to Trina Robbins at the 1987 San Diego Comicon. According to Jackie Estrada, this meeting foreshadowed the founding of Friends of Lulu, a pioneering women cartoonists advocacy organization. Roberta was a groundbreaking artist who rarely gets (or seeks) the recognition she richly deserves. Canadian cartoonist Robin Bouge kindly sent me a complimentary copy of Gutter Hunter, chronicling the pleasure (and despair) of collecting counterculture comix. This issue contains the sordid story of my affection for Stefan Dinter’s Crack W***e, wherein I appear as Hector, proprietor of a taco truck. While I have no recollection of this incident , it seems Robin tried to buy a copy of this depraved comic at the bookstore around 2009. In the Fantagraphics oral history book, Comics as Art, Eric Reynolds observed it was “one of the line’s most cynical titles. Larry was more proud of that than anything Fanta had published.” But I didn’t have a copy so I declined to sell it, keeping the rare issue for my own collection. Apparently Robin was deeply disappointed with this development and only recently came to terms with my determination to acquire the classic picture book.

Such was my enthusiasm for Dinter’s creation that I persuaded people to address me as Hector. I even arranged an impromptu signing at a trendy downtown nightclub. As a result, “Hector” became a minor celebrity in Seattle’s mid-90s hipster scene. I readily confess, there’s something wrong with me. I’m genuinely sorry Robin. (But you still can’t have the comic book).
