Tonight, we’re celebrating the life and career of Dolly Parton (1946-2026) via the music she created for the big and small screen. Duets with Steve Martin, Kris Kristofferson, and Burt Reynolds, some great stuff from her soundtrack to Dumplin’, and a surprise appearance by the Staples Singers are just a few of the fun things we found to go along with the big hits. Mark’s last grand gesture upon his retirement: A Special Section! This one is called Buried Treasures and Bricks in the Wall, and it’s full of films that Mark wishes were better-known or films that are significant to Scarecrow’s (and his) history. He wrote a lot of nice blurbs for the films, and intends on writing more of them (check out “posts” on our website!), so take a look and let Mark guide you through his life at Scarecrow as he makes his well-earned exit. The end of an era has come to Scarecrow Video. Our buyer, Mark Steiner, is retiring after 34 years of service. If you’ve visited Scarecrow on a weekday, chances are you’ve seen him up in his office on the second floor, working hard at expanding our collection and supplying our sales shelves with the best of the best. Mark is the beating heart of Scarecrow in so many ways, and his invaluable work has touched all of our lives, as every single box on Scarecrow’s floor has passed through Mark’s hands. It has been pointed out that Mark may very well be the longest-tenured video store employee in history.
When Mark first moved to Seattle in 1990 as a newly-graduated Michigan State alumni, he sought out Scarecrow Video to continue feeding his passion for movies, and became a regular customer at our humble Latona Avenue location. In 1992, Mark walked into Scarecrow Video completely burned out from his social services job, and was asked, “Why don’t you work here?”
 Mark recalls that at that time, in 1992, Scarecrow Video boasted 1,000 titles. And because of Mark, we have positively ballooned to over 156,000 titles today in 2026. Mark does not take all the credit for that, but views himself as more of a conduit who allowed the store to expand at the exponential rate it has. In 1993, we moved to our Roosevelt location, the buyer position was created for him, and the rest is history.
Mark sits back and fondly recalls how many generations of people he has witnessed come through Scarecrow. He has seen families form, friendships persist, and peoples’ lives change and evolve. It is this beautiful persistence of love and humanity at Scarecrow that moves Mark. He has a wealth of stories about meeting friends at Scarecrow, meeting important people in the film industry, bizarre occurrences in the store that make him roar with laughter, hard decisions that needed to be made, and so many anecdotes about his beloved wife and two children. We all wish Mark the very best as he gets the rest he deserves, and look forward to seeing what wild hobby he picks up in his retirement. Thank you for all you’ve done for Scarecrow Video, Mark, you’re a true gem in this world.

Our RIP section for the inimitable, endlessly entertaining Tim Curry is now up in the store. On the day that Tim passed, we watched only movies featuring him in the store, and it was so hard to remain sad. Everything that Tim touched was absolutely full of bombastic joy, and we were quoting him nonstop and singing along to him all day. Tim is timeless and immortal.
