Slingerlands, NY Custom Raised Bed Garden 🌿

This beautiful Bethlehem neighborhood boasts friendly neighbors, walkable streets, and the most gorgeous mature trees. But gorgeous trees come with glorious summer shade. Great for relaxing, but not so great for the summer fruiting crops we wanted to grow.

This is exactly the kind of garden problem I love solving: finding the right location, designing around the space, and creating a garden that is both productive and easy for the family to use.

We have been working together this summer on another attempt to grow veggies in the existing back deck garden beds, which are in a more shaded spot and were the original reason this client reached out for help. We have had some success with soil amendments and carefully crafted planting plans, but ultimately knew that choosing a sunnier spot would be better for a successful summer garden.

This weekend, that sunnier spot was met with the installation of two custom raised beds, just in time for fall planting. This twin border garden sits along the sunniest side of the house, conveniently along a well-traveled pathway.

We built a custom enclosure to protect the garden from deer, with four doors making the beds accessible from both sides. A stone pathway is held in place with black steel edging for an easy-to-maintain walkway around the beds.

These beds will be full of herbs, salad greens, and peas in no time!

One of my favorite parts of growing a garden isn't just the fresh food. It's the freedom.

There's something satisfying about stepping outside to pick lettuce for lunch, a handful of herbs for dinner, or tomatoes and cucumbers instead of adding another stop to your Saturday.

Around the Capital Region, the holiday weekend often means cookouts, trips to the pool, baseball games, or gathering with family and friends. It's a busy weekend, and I love knowing I can walk into the backyard and bring something fresh to the table in just a few minutes.

That's one of the reasons I love helping families create kitchen gardens that fit their lives. It isn't about growing everything you eat. It's about making fresh, homegrown food a little more convenient and a little more accessible.

Happy Independence Day! I hope you enjoy good food, great company, and a little time outside. 🇺🇸

Early July garden views --> swipe for some color and first fruits!

As for my cool season crops- peas are nearing the end of the season, brussels sprouts are looking lovely, and carrots are quietly growing beneath the soil surface.

What are you enjoying the most in your garden right now?

Garden Built. Beds Planted. Ready to Grow. 🌱

Helping busy Capital Region families grow a veggie garden together without sacrificing their limited free time is quickly becoming one of the most rewarding parts of my business.

This mom wanted to start a garden with her daughter but didn't have the time to tackle all the research, planning, and installation on her own.

Our conversation began back in March with a veggie garden consultation, where we discussed the pros and cons of in-ground gardening versus raised beds, as well as a DIY approach versus full-service installation.

For many families with young children, time is the biggest challenge, and it quickly became clear that a full-service installation was the best fit.

Together, we settled on two 4Ă—8 raised beds connected by a cattle panel trellis, enclosed with a fence and custom cedar arbor and gate. From there, Soil to Savor handled all the behind-the-scenes work, transforming this corner of the yard from grass into a beautiful enclosed garden ready for a season of growing.

To make the process even easier, she also chose my Summer Starter Package. I created a customized planting plan based on her family's interests, sourced all of the plants and supplies, and then we spent a couple of hours planting the garden together. Along the way, we talked about each crop, what to expect throughout the season, and how to care for everything as it grows.

Now, instead of feeling overwhelmed by where to start, she and her daughter can focus on the fun part: watching their garden grow, harvesting fresh food, and making memories together. 🌱💚

If you’ve been dreaming about a garden but don’t have the time to figure it all out, I can take care of the planning, setup, and planting so you can enjoy the growing season. Schedule a free discovery call today to get started.

I spent my morning with preschoolers today as we filled in blank garden spaces with summer veggies, herbs, and flowers.

But I couldn't help but admire the beauty of the spring garden that we planted together back at the beginning of April.

Seriously... gorgeous blooms on the peas, chives, and pansies. First harvests from the peas too. Mature lettuce that the kids loved snacking on. And carrots well on their way to growing the delicious orange root that they get so excited to harvest and eat.

This is why I emphasize planting seasonally with my clients.

Lettuce, peas, chives, pansies, spinach, and more... they all thrive in the cool weather of spring. And they also won't grow in the heat of summer.

If we waited to plant until Memorial Day like most recommend around here, we wouldn't be enjoying the beauty of this garden or the harvest it is currently providing.

Are you enjoying a spring harvest in your garden right now?

The first harvests of the season have arrived in my garden - salad greens and radishes! 🥗🌱

For lunch this week, I’ve been enjoying fresh homegrown salads straight from my backyard. Between my raised beds, GreenStalk planter, and my salad workshop demo planter, I have more greens than I can snip each day!

Seriously... giant red mustard leaves, spinach, several types of lettuce, Swiss chard, and two kinds of kale. My French Breakfast radishes are also ready for harvest whenever I want them.

If you want nutrient-dense salads like this from your own garden, you need to plant with the seasons! Many salad crops thrive in cooler temperatures, which means spring and fall are their time to shine. Don’t look for fresh lettuce in my garden come July - it won’t be there anymore!

Comment SALAD and I’ll send you my free guide to planting seasonally in the Capital Region. 🌿

A rainy day brightened with fragrant herbs 🌿
Saturday’s weather may have kept many people indoors under a blanket, but it turned out to be the perfect spring day to spend inside the greenhouse at in Slingerlands, NY!

We had a fantastic turnout, including many first-time gardeners eager to learn all things herbs.

We started with refreshments - hot tea and a few herb-inspired treats: Caprese skewers, chive dip, and rosemary focaccia.

Then I shared care instructions for each of the six herbs we planted: rosemary, basil, parsley, oregano, thyme, and chives. We discovered that herbs are some of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow. In many ways, tending them simply means harvesting and enjoying them fresh, or preserving them for later use!

Finally, attendees chose their planter, filled it with beautiful soil, and picked out their herbs. After a brief demo, everyone got to planting and adding wooden plant tags to help remember what was what.

The finished planters were absolutely beautiful. I hope everyone enjoys them as much as I enjoyed bringing this workshop to life.

Thank you again to Becker's Nursery for hosting this workshop at your beautiful nursery!
