This week has been a w**e and mead week, my kitchen counters covered in gallons and gallons. Over this last year I've been researching and trying my hand at creating folk w**es and honey meads using the fruit, flowers, and herbs I have in my local area. I was happily surprised at the absolute abundance of material that can be used! Roses, quince blossoms, violets, muscadine, daylily, dandelion.. My only "ick" moments have come from reading umpteen books on w**emaking that call for unnatural flavoring and chemical stabilizers. No thanks. So, I did more research to see what people used before. Now I wait and see! I'm mentally making a checklist to make a batch of mead using wild yeasts from juniper. There will be failures, that's the nature of the beast. But, hey...it's my mead for myself. If it's terrible, I learned. If it's not...well, then that's a new road.

It's hot hot today! But, the first of the chamomile blossoms are picked...so a new batch of Sleepy Head lotion will be ready in the next few days. I'm also testing a new herbal fly and mosquito repellant. I've been tweaking the recipe for a better scent

One of the great things about working with the cycles of nature is having staggered harvests. As soon as the quince blossoms finished, cherry blossoms opened. Then roses overlap spiderwort and honeysuckle. It makes for an interesting life, lol. Today is for making rose w**e and honeysuckle jelly...who knows about tomorrow. Maybe rose milk bath, but Madame Yarrow is near blooming too...and that means tincture time.

So the weather is finally taking a break from cold and blustery so I can go in search of some wild greens! My family has begun our spring herbal detox from all the heavy winter foods, and I'll be the first to say...teas are getting old, lol. I'm ready for fresh dandelion, gill-over-the ground, and chickweed. There is nothing like that first bowl of salad greens to remind your body that winter won't last forever.

What an odd winter...dark and dreary and yet not cold enough to be winter..

Please forgive my absence Lovies. Difficult times are on me right now. I share alot about my life on the Toad's page, mostly on self sustainability, witchcraft, and wortcraft. I dont usually share much about my personal life, or my health. Most of you know that I depend a great deal on the plants I grow and wildharvest to see to my health needs. What I dont say much about is that I also have kidney disease. Its something that requires both herbal and conventional medicine. And right now, Im sick. Real sick. I still have a full inventory, but I cant take new commissions for a bit. Besides the little homestead, the kids and their back to school/social lives(not even gonna go there tonite... Did you know so and so is allergic to shrimp and the other so and so has a boyfriend?), and babysitting some long hours, Im taking a hard look at what I can actually accomplish right now. Getting fully dressed in real jeans(not jamas)....I can still do...most days. Weeding the garden....only with help. Degreasing skulls is still enjoyable, carving vertabraxe into candlesticks...not so much. It will get better, always does. Please bear with me for now. If you message and I dont get right back to you, I promise I will just as quickly as I can.

Rainy days are a blessing to me! Then I get to come indoors and be spoiled in the air conditioning for a bit, lol. Im long overdue finishing some pagan rosaries and prayer beads anyway!

Ppl assume that once an animal is rescued and finds a home, its all happy endings, and face licks, and full bellies. Not so. Today my dog Redman reminded me that sometimes, there is no amount of love that can take away what's been done to you. Sometimes, the best i can do for him is to let him live his life on his own terms. He's progressed by leaps and bounds in the years we have had him, he no longer pees himself when I touch him, for example. And...sometimes he even plays...which is HUGE. However, there's been nothing that can change how anxious he is. This morning, a neighbor slammed his tailgate, and poor Redman peed all over his legs and hit the dirt. Phoebe(my Old English sheepdog), in true Pheeb fashion, goes to him and stands over him...she has him under her massive legs and began to drop her head looking for his "attacker". Before I could even get out of the chicken coop, she had him up and moving toward the house. She herded him in and came back to get me. She has done more for him than I ever could.
