THE RESULTS ARE IN! You made our Backyard Birding Photo Contest VERY hard to judge — but we have a winner!

Birdie charcuterie is having a moment! And the best part? You don’t need a fancy charcuterie board to make one! Use a wooden serving board, platform feeder, fly-through feeder, deck tray or any open tray feeder to create your spread. Kim went with wood for this one because our birds deserve the bougie board. 😂

A few tips when building yours:

🐛 Dried mealworms are packed with protein and are especially popular with bluebirds.

☀️ No-melt suet is a great option for those hot Maryland days.

🥜 Stick with raw, unsalted peanuts rather than roasted or salted varieties.

🐦 Suet balls and seed bells give birds something they can land on, peck at and work on rather than simply grabbing loose seed.

🍊 Add a little fresh fruit! Oranges are especially well known for attracting Baltimore and Orchard Orioles when they’re around.

🪱 And yes…you can even add live mealworms. Eastern Bluebirds will thank you.

So who might stop by your birdie charcuterie board? Cardinals, Blue Jays, Tufted Titmice, Nuthatches, Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers, Eastern Bluebirds, Orioles — and probably a squirrel who wasn’t invited. 🐿️😂

A little bluebird update from Severna Park 💙 After losing their previous hatchlings when a large black snake found its way into their nest box, this Eastern Bluebird pair started again — in a new box, with a fourth clutch of four eggs.

Two successfully hatched. Two did not. And this week, the live nest cam caught something fascinating: Mama Bluebird removing one of the unhatched eggs from the nest.

Now Mom and Dad are busy delivering meals 🐛 while these two little survivors grow bigger by the day. 💙

🐦 Did you know Purple Martins in the eastern United States rely almost entirely on people for their homes?

Unlike many birds, Purple Martins in our region rarely nest in natural tree cavities. Instead, they depend on properly maintained birdhouses to raise their young.

After recent storms damaged this Purple Martin house on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, we headed out to rebuild and reinstall it so it would be ready for another nesting season.

💜 Fun Fact: Adult Purple Martins often return to the same nesting colony year after year, making well-maintained housing incredibly important.

THEY’RE COMING!!! Hummingbirds are coming everyone. Please get your feeders cleaned and put them out to help these little guys!

Research indicates a hummingbird can travel as much as 23 miles in one day. However, during migration as they cross the Gulf they may cover up to 500 miles at a time. Their average speed in direct flight is in the range of 20-30mph, and up to three times that fast during courtship dives.

During migration, a hummingbird’s heart beats up to 1,260 times a minute, and its wings flap 15 to 80 times a second. To support this high energy level, a hummingbird will typically gain 25-40% of their body weight before they start migration in order to make the long trek over land, and water.

The first arrivals in spring are usually males. Some, however, do not migrate, in areas like California and the upper Pacific coast, the southern United States, and some along the southern Atlantic Ocean areas.
