Today, East Tennessee — and especially those of us who call Sevier County home — mourns the loss of Dolly Parton. 🕊️

The world knew Dolly as an entertainer, songwriter, businesswoman and icon. But those of us who grew up here knew something more:

Dolly never forgot where she came from.

For Tyson and me, Dolly’s generosity is part of our own story.

We are both lifelong residents of this community, and we were members of the very first class of students to benefit from Dolly’s Buddy Program. Dolly promised that if we stayed in school, graduated, and encouraged our “buddy” to graduate alongside us, she would give us $500 each.

At that age, $500 sounded like a fortune. Looking back, we understand the real gift was much greater.

She was telling a generation of local kids that our futures mattered.

That was Dolly.

No matter how far her talent took her, she never left these mountains or their people behind. She gave generously to children, education, families and neighbors, and she continually invested in the community that raised her.

Tyson and I have always remembered and taught our sons that where we come from matters — that our history, our families, our mountains, and the generations who came before us are worth remembering and preserving.

Few people represented that belief better than Dolly Parton.

Her music will be played around the world for generations, but here at home, we believe one of her greatest legacies will always be much simpler:

She made it big, but she never forgot the people or the place she called home.

Tyson and I will forever be grateful that, long before Mountain Brothers ever existed, we were two local kids whose lives were touched by her generosity.

Our prayers are with Dolly’s family, friends, the Dollywood family, and everyone across our mountains who is mourning today.

Thank you, Dolly, for believing in the children of Sevier County.
Thank you for believing in us.
And most of all, thank you for never forgetting home. ❤️
